Introduction

The hurricane Irma was a storm for the record books. It

caused devastation to the fullest extent. To understand
Irma however, First we need to look into what hurricanes
are. So let’s start the journey
Pg.2

The Recipe Of Making a Hurricane

Ingredients:
 Warm Moist air above ocean
 Sun light
 Wind

CAUTION:You will so need to stay clear of it. Highly

dangerous and could kill you
Pg.3

Procedure
 Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters e.g. Pacific Ocean
 The moist Air over the ocean heats up and rises to form clouds
called super cells. These have a lot of energy in them because of
the heat that comes out from the cooling water vapors.
 Due to this a low pressure is created on top of the ocean causing air
from other places to flee in to take their place to eventually rise
again full of moisture. So, the process continues.
 When these clouds are fed with enough moisture as more moist air
continues to rise it starts to rain.
Pg.4

Continued…
 While it is raining the moist warm air above the
ocean continues to rise soon being replaced by
air from other places due to air pressure causing
the super cell to increase in size with more
energy
 When the rising air collides with the already
increasing cloud it changes direction.
 This makes the cloud start to rotate.
 This is the brewing of a storm.
Pg.5

The nasty touch of the cloud

 As it starts to spin the center of the cloud starts to push its

way out and descends towards the land creating the eye of
the storm.
 The energy from the cloud (super cell)helps this action
take place
 The second this touches land it is a hurricane
Pg.6

Last Bits
There are FIVE types of hurricanes
Category 1 Hurricane.

Winds are up to 74-95 mph

Category 2 Hurricane. winds 96-110 mph
Winds are up to 96-110 mph
Category 3 Hurricane
Winds are up to 111-130 mph
Category 4 Hurricane.
Winds are up to 131-155 mph
Category 5 hurricane
Winds are up to 156-180
Now that we know what a
hurricane is let’s study the
hurricane Irma
Pg.7

FACT‘S ABOUT IRMA

 Hurricane Irma’s reign was from August 2017 – 16 September
2017
 The highest recorded wind speed of the hurricane Irma was 185
mph
 It spent 8 days as a major hurricane
3 day lifetime as a category 5 hurricane . Irma is tied with with
the 1932 Cuba hurricane in this regard.
Pg.8

CONTINUED…

 The hurricane Harvey

wrought major damage in
Houston, the power it
produced is dwarfed by
Irma.
 This is the first time on
record that two category 4
hurricanes have made
landfall in the United
States of America
Pg.9

THE PATH OF THE HURRICANE

The hurricane Irma has

brought devastation to
the Caribbean region , hitting
many small islands such a
Porto Rico before moving on
to the Bahamas, Cuba
and Florida.
Pg.10

CAUSE

 As mentioned before the strength of a hurricane is determined

by three main factors: high temperature, wind , and moisture in
the atmosphere.
 These conditions have been ideal for Irma.
 Itgot an abundance of moisture when it reached the costal state
of Florida.
Pg.11

CONTINUED…
 The Atlantic, meanwhile
provided it with high
temperatures as it reaches its
hottest temperatures for the year
in September Atlantic is a degree
or two Fahrenheit hotter than it
usually is this time of year, which
is providing Irma with some
extra fuel. Especially with its
history of powerful hurricanes.
Pg.12

RESULT OF CLIMATIC CHANGE???

 This is always a tricky question when it comes to hurricanes.
 Scientists are still figuring out what, exactly, is “normal.”
 If we look at the graph on the previous page however, we can see that
the intensity of the hurricanes have become more since the past few
years
 Therefore we are affected by climatic change to a certain extent
 Climate change science predicts that in the future, hurricanes will
intensify. There will be simply more energy available for hurricanes to
form, and more moisture in the air to sustain them.
Pg.13

Evacuation!!!
 Thanks to improvements in technology we can track storms of this
kind, those living in the direct path of Irma already knew what was to
come and had been forewarned to evacuate .
 The Bahamas underwent its largest ever evacuation procedure with
5,000 people leaving the islands
 6.3 million people were told to evacuate from Florida.
 Still the effects of Irma are devastating as many people‘s home is
destroyed.
Pg.14

The Dark Angel

"This is a storm that will kill you if you don't get out of the
way.” While Dennis the National Hurricane Center
meteorologist and spokesman said this ,there have still been
some deaths. The following are the impacts of the
hurricane:
Pg.15

IN THE ISLANDS….

On islands such as
Barbuda with 1,800-
person island 60% of
the people were left
homeless  by the storm
and 95 percent of the
island’s buildings were
damaged.
Pg.16

IN FLORIDA…
8 People died in a
nursing home as
resources failed
after the hurricane.
A sheriff also was
reported dead in a
small town. Irma
caused disaster
even after it died.
Pg.17

CONTINUED…

At least four have been

reported dead in the U.S.
Virgin Islands. Despite the
fact that the islands were
relatively well prepared for
the storm. This tells us
that the Irma‘s vile
strength was so much
that it hastily managed
to kill people even
though precautions
were taken.
Pg.18

CONTINUED….

Even people who are well of,

experienced the hurricanes
wrath imagine what people in
rural areas might have gone
through. Residents of a rural
migrant-worker town wait for
emergency donations on Sept.
14.
Pg.19

Time to take actions:

We as humans shall help those who face such vicious beasts. After all
the best way to show our humanity is by helping others. Here is what
we could do to help those in need
 Participatein donation programs that have the means to reach out to
the people in need.
 When a disaster hits somewhere near you home take up this
challenge called “Rice Bucket,“ with your friends and go around
your locality collecting rice from people who are well of and ask an
adult to help you send it to the required destination
Pg.20

A Little Hope For The Hopeless

 There’s really not much anyone can do once hurricanes like these spool up.
Scientists have tried and failed to stop full-on hurricanes in their tracks.
 But rising sea levels and increasing average temperatures due to climate change
are further expanding the destruction capacity  of these storms. Leading to
storms such as Irma.
 Some engineers and entrepreneurs, including Bill Gates, are studying ways to
dial back destruction from a hurricane. Much of the research is focused on
manipulating temperature, moisture, and wind to steer when and where these
storms will occur.
Pg.21

Conclusion
The Hurricane Irma had catastrophic effects on the places it hit. By
gods good grace people are starting to recover from the damage.
Governments in several Caribbean countries are starting to rebuild
infrastructures, houses and communities with UN on the ground
support. Big clean up begins in Florida after Hurricane Irma. People
have gone through loss but in the end everything will be alright. What
do you think, will people recover? Or perhaps whether there will be
worse disasters in the future?
