Module 3:
Activities of the Self

Lecture 10, 11:

Human Being
Module- 3
Module 3: Understanding Human Being
Understanding the human being comprehensively is the first step and
the core theme of this course; human being as co-existence of the self
and the body; the activities and potentialities of the self; Reasons for
harmony/contradiction in the self

In Module 3, we are going to investigate in further depth and also

in further detail about Human Being
· Understanding the human being as co-existence of the self and the
body, an in depth investigation into need, activities and response of
both the self and the body, reinforced by direct observation (thru
Practice Session- Exercise 1 & 2) (Lecture-10, 11);
· The activities and potentialities of the self, in further depth and detail
(Lecture-12 to 14);
· Reasons for harmony/contradiction in the self (Lecture- 14)
· Sources of Happiness- reviewed in the light of the above (Lecture-15)
2
Lecture-10 and 11- its Content
In Lecture-10 and 11, we are going to investigate in further depth
and also in further detail about Human Being
· In particularly, we will try to understand the human being as co-
existence of the self and the body.
· An in depth investigation into need, activities and response of both the
self and the body, will be made.
· Till now, for most of the people, major effort was at the level of
thought, at the level of acceptance through rational enquiry.
· However, now this will be reinforced by direct observation (thru
Practice Session- Exercise 1 & 2).
· A brief discussion on the basic content snd process of Exercise 1 and
2 , will give us an idea about the possible outcome of it; on the basis
of which we can conclude many things of importance in studying
human being

3
Exercises 1 and 2

We (each one of us) are

doing these exercises for
developing ourselves

- Developing understanding and

- Purification of accumulated feelings and
thoughts
Exercise 1

Observing the Self by the Self

Looking within

Note:
This is just one way of looking within (not the only way)
The steps mentioned in this exercise are one possible set of steps
(not the only set of steps)
To See (To Observe)
For these observations:

Do I need to use the eyes to see the Self?

e.g. to see my imagination, do I need to use my eyes?
No  Give rest to the eyes
 Keep eyes in a comfortable position (open, closed, half open,
whatever is comfortable…)

Do I need to take any work from the body?

e.g. to see my feeling, do I need to take any work from my Body?
No  Give rest to the body
 Keep it in any comfortable position (in any posture which is
comfortable …)
Exercise 1: Observing the Self by the Self – Every Moment
1. Be aware – Observe your imagination at this moment, i.e. the desire (feeling), thought,
expectation.
2. Is the feeling that you have at this moment naturally acceptable to you?
3. Are you comfortable, in harmony, happy with the feeling that you have at this moment?
4. Who decided the feeling that you have at this moment?
Did you decide it or someone else/situation outside decided it?
5. On what basis did you decide the feeling you have at this moment?
Did you decide it on the basis of understanding or on the basis of an assumption?
6. Which feelings are naturally acceptable to you?
Feelings of relationship or opposition, harmony or disharmony and co-existence or struggle?
If feelings of relationship, harmony, and co-existence is naturally acceptable, there is a need
to understand relationship, harmony and co-existence.
7. Ensure that the feeling that you have at this moment is in line with the feeling of Relationship,
Harmony and Co-existence and not otherwise.
If these feelings are ensured in continuity then we will be in state of harmony and happiness
every moment i.e. we will be in state of continuous happiness.

It is important to note that when I am able to understand relationship, harmony and co-
existence in its completeness, then
I will be able to decide my feeling, thought accordingly and I will always be comfortable
within, I will be in a state of continuous happiness
Exercises 2

We (each one of us) are

doing these exercises for
developing ourselves

- Developing understanding and

- Purification of accumulated feelings and
thoughts
Exercise 2: Observing the Self, the Body and the interaction
between the Self and the Body in Space – by the Self
1. I am, the body is. I can see them by observing their activities.
2. I transact information with the body by giving instruction to body and reading
some sensation from the body.
3. I am the one who decides – what instruction are to be passed to the body,
and what sensations are to be read from the body.
I decide to transact – from time to time, as and when required
4. I can read the sensation taking place in any part of the Body from where I am,
at a distance from the sensation – there is a distance between the Self and
the Body
5. My interaction with the Body or the world outside is by way of sensation. I
give meaning to the sensation. My reaction or response depends on my
sanskar:
6a. I tend to react if my sanskar is based on assumption
- I decide my feeling (right or wrong), become happy or unhappy based on external inputs – I
react
6b. I respond when my sanskar is based on understanding
- I continue to remain in harmony. My feeling remains natural, in accordance with human
nature – I continue to be in a state of happiness. I use external input to rightly evaluate the
external situation – I respond
Exercise 2: Observing the Self, the Body and the interaction
between the Self and the Body in Space – by the Self

7. Observing My Being in Space

I am in co-existence, in space
The body is also in co-existence, in space
I am transacting information with body through space
This step 7 is a step which is introduced with the idea that you start
working on it; so that you start getting a feel of it by the time (say around
a month) we come to Exercise 3 i.e. Observing the co-existence by the
self.

So, just start observing; donot try to conclude things in a hurry,

keep working on it, keep observing.
Lecture-10 and 11- its Content
· We have already started working on Exercise 1, where we are trying
to observe the self by the self in 7 steps.
· The 7 steps of Exercise 1 and 2 is placed, in brief, to get a feel of what
we are doing. Detailed discussion and practice is done in Practice
Sessions, which is being run along with the content delivery (2 lecture
on content followed by 1 Practice Session). By now, we must have
gone through 4 or 5 practice sessions covering 3 or 4 steps of
exercise 1 and it must have given a feel of clarity and confidence
obtained out of direct observation.

11
Lecture-10 and 11- its Content
· In step 1, we are being aware of our imagination every moment. With
some effort, we are able to see the imagination going on in the self.
Further, we are able to see the desire, thought and expectation in the
imagination by direct observation.
· We can see that whenever we pay attention, we find that the
imagination is going on at that moment of time, so, it can be deduced
that it is going on every moment. It can be confirmed by observing the
imagination every moment
· In step 2, we are evaluating the feeling (desire) in our imagination, at
this moment. We are verifying whether it is natural or unnatural,
whether it is naturally acceptable or not. This verification is being done
from B1.
· In step 3, we are evaluating whether with this feeling (desire), we are
in a state of harmony or disharmony, happiness or unhappiness. This
gives us the feel that our happiness is related to harmony and
harmony is related to our feeling.

12
Lecture-10 and 11- its Content
· In step 4, we are trying to find out- who is deciding the feeling that I
have at this moment? The answer we get is that ultimately, it is me
who is deciding. This gives us the clarity that ultimately I am
responsible for my feelings, for my harmony and happiness.
· In step 5, we are able to see that if this feeling is based on right
underrstanding, then it will definitely be a natural feeling and it will lead
to happiness. This confirms our proposal that right undestanding and
right feeling is the source of continious happiness
·…
So, through these steps in Exercise 1, we are able to verify the
proposals we made regarding self in an experiential basis.
Similarly, we are able to verify many proposal regarding interaction
between self and body by direct observation through 7 steps of
Exercise 2.
This we will keep discussing in the lecture 11 and as we go further.

13
Lecture-10 and 11- its Content
· Most of what we will discuss about human being, now, is already there
as proposal, but, now we are going to verify them by direct
observation; and that will give us better clarity and depth than what we
could achieve through our analysis at the level of thought.

3.1. Right Understanding- Awakening to Higher Activities of Self
Right understanding is essentially seeing the essence of the reality as it is, i.e. seeing
the part of the reality that is definite, universal and continuous:

 Natural Characteristic (participation in larger order)

 Innateness (self organisation)
 Co-existence (submergence)
i.e.
 Natural Characteristic (relationship)
 Innateness (harmony)
 Co-existence (co-existence)
Through- Higher Activities of Self
 Contemplation
 Understanding
 Realisation

Ultimately, there are only few (9) things to understand:

- Innateness of the four orders (4)
- Natural characteristics of the four orders (4)
- Co-existence (1)

Process of Knowing-Awakening to Activity of Contemplation..
Realisation…Contemplation,
Contemplation: Understanding
of My Participation in Larger Order& Realisation
Every unit has a definite participation in existence, a definite role to play in this
existence,
To be able to see this role, this participation in relationship with other units, is
called contemplation

In case of human being, it means trying to see

What is my role in this existence.
What is my participation in larger order… self, family, society, nature/existence
What is my value in existence (Human Value) e.g. in
Relationship of Mutual Fulfillment with Human Being  Mutual Happiness 
Undivided Society- trust, respect, affection… love

With this, I can see that I have a definite role to play as a human being.
Then my desire is to fulfill that definite role – my desires become definite
I can see that there is provision for fulfillment of these definite desires in nature.
This leads to a feeling of satisfaction/contentment.
37
Process of Knowing-Awakening to Activity of
Understanding.. …
Understanding: of Harmony (Self-organisation) in Nature
All units in Nature can be classified into 4 orders.
These units and the four orders have defintie Innateness or Self-
organisation
which can be understood

This definiteness (borne out of understanding) leads to a feeling of bliss

When I understand this, I am determined to live with my self-

organisation, my innateness, my harmony
And I facilitate the self-organisation of other units

38
Process of Knowing-Awakening to Activity of Realisation…
Realisation: of Co-existence
Existence is Co-existence, which is in the form of units submerged in space
Every unit in Nature is:
1. Energised in space
2. Self-organised in space, exists in a definite order
3. Recognises its relationship with every other unit and fulfills the relationship in
space

This when seen in the case of the self as an unit-

I am a unit of consciousness in space
I am energised in space. Activities of desire, thought, expectation… are
continuous in me
I am self-organised in space; I exist in a definite order
I can recognise my relationship with other units and fulfill it. When I do, I feel
happy, when I do not, I feel unhappy…

With this realisation, I live with authenticity, in continuity

Motivation for Imagination : Preconditioning, Sensation or Natural Acceptance

Preconditioning: Assuming without knowing. Depends on something or

someone outside, keeps changing. Not sure it leads to harmony or
contradiction.
Sensation: taste of sound, touch, sight, taste, smell, 4 topics: food,
sleep, fear/security, sex (samvedna – shabd, sparsh, roop, ras, gandh,
4 vishay: ahar, nidra, bhay, maithun)

Lecture 15:
Possible Sources of Happiness
Possible Sources of Happiness
In the first course in UHV and now in this course UHV2, our major
concern has been the basic aspiration of human being and its fulfillment.
We identified happiness and its continuity as the basic aspiration
and
We are trying to explore and understand
the program for ensuring happiness and its continuity

The important conclusions of this investigation has been the following:

Happiness and its continuity is ensured by
right understanding, right feeling and thought in the self
This is depicted systematically in the diagrams of activities of the self
which we have been studying in last few sessions. We are recalling
them for ready reference.

Possible Sources of Happiness- 1. Right understanding, Right feeling and thought

Let us make some observation about what we are able to deduce-

Awakening to the higher activities of the self, we are able to see relationship… in this
nature/ existence
Under the guidance of this, our desire (feeling) and thought are in line with relationship…
every moment
This ensures that self is in harmony within and therefore, in a state of happiness every
moment, in continuity

This state of harmony at different levels of activities of the self is felt as

Bliss- Harmony between realisation and understanding,
Satisfaction- “ “ understanding and contemplation
Peace- “ “ contemplation and comparing and
Happiness – “ “ comparing and tasting

When we say continuous happiness, it includes all these 4 states.

So, understanding, feeling and thought of relationship, harmony and co-existence

leads to a state of continuous happiness
Right understanding, Right feeling and thought ensures continuous happiness
83
Sources of Continuous Happiness
1. Right Understanding
Harmony at all levels of being
Human Being, Family, Society, Nature/Existence
– in Self (I) Definite completion point, Continuity is possible,
Self-organisation (swatantrata)

2. Right Feeling Trust, Respect, Affection, Care, Guidance,

Reverence, Glory, Gratitude, Love
– in Self (I) Definite completion point, Continuity is possible,
Self-organisation (swatantrata)

84
Possible Sources of Happiness- Other sources

However, when we look at what we have been doing to get happiness-

We have tried many possibilities.
We will now try to look at some of them for comparative study

85
Sources of Temporary Happiness (Excitement )

2. Right Feeling Trust, Respect, Affection, Care, Guidance,

Reverence, Glory, Gratitude, Love
– From Other Temporary, Dependence on Other,
No completion point, Continuity not possible

3. Sensation, PF Sound, Touch, Form, Taste, Smell

– Through Body Temporary, Dependence on Body & Other,
No completion point, Continuity not possible
Tasty-Necessary  Tasty-Unnecessary  Tasteless-Unnecessary  Intolerable

86
Purpose of Right Understanding, Right Feeling, Sensation/PF
1. Right Understanding
Harmony at all levels of being
Human Being, Family, Society, Nature/Existence
– in Self (I)for happiness in the Self(I), definite completion pt.

2. Right Feeling Trust, Respect, Affection, Care, Guidance,

3. Sensation, PF Sound, Touch, Form, Taste, Smell

– Through Body For evaluating state of physical facility
to identify if it is OK for nurturing, protection
of body (health of body)
For behaviour / work, sharing knowledge, feeling
87
Some Prevailing Notions of Happiness & their Outcome
Some of the sources of temporary happiness can be described as follows

Owning / accumulating physical facility-

For human being, physical facility is required, but it is not sufficient…

Pleasure (from favourable sensation)

Sound, Touch, Form, Taste, Smell – Through the Body
Tasty-Necessary  Tasty-Unnecessary  Tasteless-Unnecessary  Intolerable

Attention, appreciation… (favourable feelings) from others

Dependence on the other, can’t be continuous

Sometimes “happiness”, excitement…

Sometimes unhappiness, depression…
88
Some Prevailing Means of Escape from Unhappiness, Depression
When we fail to ensure continuity of happiness through these methods and
we are in unhappiness, we take to escape from unhappiness.
Some of these escapes are-

Over eating
Over sleeping

Gutka (Doma)
Alcohol
Drugs

Violence
Suicide

Ultimately, we keep oscillating between Excitement and Escape – Not

The Way Out
So, we keep oscillating between Excitement and Escape – Not able to

The only way to get out of this vicious circle is to work through method 1
–ensuring
Right understanding, Right feeling and thought leading to

i.e.
understanding, feeling and thought of relationship, harmony and

How Do we Work through Method 1
To work through method 1
i.e. ensuring
Right understanding, Right feeling and thought leading to
continuous happiness
Which is essentially,
understanding, feeling and thought of relationship, harmony and
co-existence leading to a state of continuous happiness

One possible way is to work through the 3 Exercises discussed under

Practice Session of this course.
Exercise 1 i.e. observing the self by the self- helps us to see that feeling
of relationship, harmony and co-existence is natural acceptable
feeling for us; and if we ensure that the feeling I have in my
imagination at this moment of time is in accordance with it, then I can be
in a state of happiness at this moment. If if we can ensure this every
moment, we can be in a state of happiness every moment, in continuity.
94
How Do we Work through Method 1
Exercise 2 ensures that this state of the self can remain unaffected from
any influence of the body or external input, rather we can respond to
them in a mutually fulfilling manner

Exercise 3 facilitates the process of reaching to that state by realising

that self is submerged in Space and that need for ensuring
understanding, feeling and thought of relationship, harmony and
co-existence leading to a state of continuous happiness
is fulfilled in Space for the self, atleast that provision is there, we have to
realise it through our effort (may be through these three exercises).
