Introduction
Pavement Milling
• Existing asphalt pavement materials are
commonly removed during resurfacing,
rehabilitation, or reconstruction operations.

• Once removed and processed, the

pavement material becomes Reclaimed
Asphalt Pavement (RAP), which contains
valuable asphalt binder and aggregate.

• RAP is a valuable, high-quality material that

can replace more expensive virgin
aggregates and binders.

Asphalt Pavement Removal

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is the removed or reprocessed
pavement materials which contains asphalt and aggregates. These materials
are generated when asphalt pavements are removed for reconstruction,
resurfacing, or to obtain access to buried utilities.

WHY RAP?
❖ India has a very long road network of about 5.89 million km.
❖ The requirement of road construction materials is increasing day by day.
However, the availability of natural resources is limited.
❖ This leads to the requirement of looking out for alternative construction
materials.

USES OF RAP
Incidentally, huge quantities of existing bituminous pavement materials are generally
milled / removed during resurfacing, rehabilitation and / or reconstruction operations.
RAP can be used in a variety of ways such as:

● As an addition to regular HMA.

● As an aggregate in cold-mix asphalt.
● As a granular base course when pulverized.
● As a fill or embankment material.

High quality uniform RAP - hot mix asphalt (HMA).

Other RAP - sub-base / base layers.

NEED FOR THE STUDY
Isolate RAP Sources

• the existing distress pavement is milled and is

dumped in the landfills.

• RAP is dumped in Egmore and <15% of these

are used in road construction along with
conventional aggregate.

• Increasing the usage of RAP in new pavements

would reduce the cost of handling and
transportation of virgin aggregates. And hence
reduce the construction cost.

Blend Multiple Sources

OBJECTIVES

• To study the properties of recycled asphalt

pavement.
• To conduct the cost analysis of the new mix
design added to the existing pavement layer
for Cold in Place Recycling.
• To evaluate the strength and stability of the
mix design under laboratory conditions.
SCOPE OF THE WORK.

• < 15% of RAP material used in road construction

along with conventional aggregate and a large
quantity of material is dumped in the yards.
• In India, about 15,000 tons of aggregates are
required per km of highway. The demand for the
pavement materials has increased owing to new
road construction and overlaying of pavement..
• so effectively utilization of RAP material would
reduce demand as well as the construction cost.
LITERATURE REVIEW

• “An overview of reclaimed asphalt pavement (rap)

materials in warm mix asphalt using foaming
technology” - Mohammad Nasir Mohamad Taher and
Mohamad Yusri Aman
• Key Observations:
– The strength characteristics of foamed asphalt approach
those of cemented materials, but foamed asphalt is flexible
and fatigue resistant
– It is essential to have a proper mix design procedure for
foamed asphalt mixes in order to optimize the usage of
available materials and to optimize mix properties
