Pros and Cons.
History of Social Network
 The history of all social network sites start in ’70s.
 Up until now, it has been gone over 3 significant

periods:
 The Early Period.

 The Expanding Period.

 The Development Period.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Early Period
 The Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS or
BBS) by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess in 1978: a
virtual system where users could post public messages
akin to an office cork board.
 CBBS was created to informing the other members of

their group about meetings and important

announcements.
 But as more members began to dial in to talk and share

information through individual postings make the idea

of making a small virtual community began to emerge.

History of S.N. - The Early Period (4)

 While CBBS didn't exactly become popular, other

ASCII bulletin boards followed its lead and began
to pop up across a variety of platforms
 We can include some names like AppleNet and

GBBS for the Apple II.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Early Period (5)

 In the early 1980s, BBS slowly began to become

more streamlined under the light of Microsoft Disk
Operating System.
 One of the first of posting and replying types of

communities, the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link

(WELL), was conceived in 1985 and grew into
one of the oldest, most respected boards around.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Early Period (6)

 One of the first modern-like social network site,

Geocities was found in 1994, allow its user to
create their own page which categorized by one of
6 “cities”.
 Another site named theGlobe.com was found in
1996, have a remarkable step in giving the users
freedom to publishing their contents and interacting
with others that have similar interests.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Expanding Period

 Start with The America Online (AOL) and its

member-created communities, complete with
searchable "Member Profiles”, were arguably the
service’s most fascinating, forward-thinking
feature.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Expanding Period (2)

 Sporting a name based on the theory that no person

is separated by more than six degrees from another,
the site sixdegrees.com sprung up in 1997 and was
one of the very first to allow its users to create
profiles, invite friends, organize groups, and surf
other user profiles.

CT10QUEE - Group 1 - Social network

History of S.N. - The Expanding Period (3)

 Other sites of this era is made solely for demographic-

driven markets. One was AsianAvenue.com, founded in
1997, a product of Community Connect Inc. (future
Community Connect CEO Ben Sun).
 AsianAvenue.com was followed in 1999 by

BlackPlanet.com,
 And in 2000, by the Hispanic-oriented MiGente.com.

 The site dot-com bubble, was sending the stock markets

crashing. And as they said, “sending web entrepreneurs

back to the drawing boards”.

History of S.N. - The Development Period

 In 2002, social networking hit really its stride with the

launch of Friendster. This site used a degree of
separation concept similar to SixDegrees.com, refined
it into a routine dubbed the “Circle of Friends”.
 Following the idea that a rich online community can

exist by only between people who truly have

common bonds.
 Thus make the connection form into a chain of

bonds, hence the name “Circle of Friends”.

more serious, sober approach to the social networking
phenomenon.

classmates, teenagers, and cyberspace Don Juan.
