DIABETES

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health

condition that affects how your body
turns food into energy. Most of the food
you eat is broken down into sugar (also
called glucose) and released into your
bloodstream. When your blood sugar goes
up, it signals your pancreas to release
insulin.
DIABETES

●Type 1 diabetes results from failure of the pancreas to

produce enough insulin due to loss of beta cells. This
form was previously referred to as "insulin-dependent
diabetes

●Type 2 diabetes begins with insulin resistance, a

condition in which cells fail to respond to insulin
properly. Type 2 diabetes is more common in older adults
SIGNS AND
SYMPTOMS

 weight loss    blurred vision polyuria

SIGNS AND
SYMPTOMS

 polyphagia   diabetic Kussmaul

ketoacidosis breathing
 a deep and labored breathing
pattern often associated with
severe metabolic acidosis
CAUSES
Causes of type 1 diabetes
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. What is known is that your immune system — which normally fights harmful
bacteria or viruses — attacks and destroys your insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves you with little or no insulin.
Instead of being transported into your cells, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.

Causes of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, your cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and your pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to
overcome this resistance. Instead of moving into your cells where it's needed for energy, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.
Exactly why this happens is uncertain, although it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the
development of type 2 diabetes too. Being overweight is strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes, but not everyone
with type 2 is overweight.

FIRST APPOINTEMENT

DOCTOR : Good morning. I am very pleased to have you here today.

PATIENT: Good morning,doctor.
DOCTOR : Please, have a seat. What brings you here today Mrs.Ioana? How may I help you?
PATIENT: Recently, I started feeling fatigued and I am having frequent urination. I have also noticed that my
vision is kind of blurry, too, but since I know myself I had eye problems.
DOCTOR : Tell me, have you been changing your diet lately or have you started to drink more water?
PATIENT: Not at all, I was always thought to drink more water throughout the day, but I have started to feel
real thirst nowadays. Should this be a problem?
DOCTOR : I understand. Do you have any other symptoms?
PATIENT: No, no one that comes to my mind.
DOCTOR : Ok.Thank you for all this information you have provided. In order to put a diagnosis, I am going to
need a few more information about you. For how long have you been experiencing these symptoms?
PATIENT: I have had them for about 2 months now. First I thought to myself that I am getting older, but Then
my son told me I should go to see the doctor.
DOCTOR : I am really glad that you have decided to consult a specialist. Are you aware of other family
members having these symptoms or maybe other medical conditions?
PATIENT: Yes, my housband has coronary disease and high blood pressure.
DOCTOR : I understand. From what you described to me,I am going to ask you show me the blood tests if you
have any.
PATIENT: Unfortunately, I don`t.
DOCTOR : No problem at all. I am going to give you to do blood tests first and then, I am going to decide our
next stept in order to put a diagnosis.
PATIENT: Thank you doctor.
Mrs. IOANA MANOLE went to take her blood tests. In this 10 weeks time, she confrunted the
same symptoms and feeling more fatiqued.

DOCTOR : Good afternoon, Mrs.Ioana. It`s really nice to have you back. I hope you are feeling better.
PATIENT: Good afternoon, doctor. Unfortunatelly, I can`t complain about how I was feeling lately. I went
to collect my results from the blood tests. Here they are :

DOCTOR : I understand. I can assure you everything will be fine. Let’s proceed, shall we?
PATIENT: Sure doctor.
DOCTOR : : According to the results you have a high level of glucose in your blood, and also your HBA1c
(glycosylated haemoglobin) is high. This confirms that you have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is when
your cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and your pancreas is unable to make enough insulin
to overcome this resistance.
DOCTOR : You don`t have reasons to be worried about this. I will prescribe you some meds which you have to
take twice a day. Oral diabetes drugs such as metformin may reduce your glucose levels, but healthy
lifestyle choices remain essential. I recommend you do some sports and reduce your sugar intake. The
diet is very important when speaking of this type of disease.
PATIENT: It`s a relief to hear this from you. I was very scared at the beginning and others scared me more
about what I should be suffering from.
DOCTOR : You should not be scared at all. Most people of your age are confrunting with type 2 diabetes and if
you do take care of your lifestyle and respect the medication plans that I am going to give you, there
should be no problems at all. Moreover, to keep track of your progress, I will need to see you every 3
months for check-ups.
PATIENT: Thank you again, doctor! I assure you I am going to take care of myself and come to regular
consultations. Have a good day!
DOCTOR : Have a great day! Stay healthy!
