DEFINITION OF Energy M &T
A technique that uses energy
information as a basis to eliminate waste, reduce costs,
and control current level of energy use.
 By monitoring: Establish the existing pattern of
energy consumed
 By Targeting: Identify operable energy consumption
level (which is desirable as a management goal to
work towards energy conservation)
Monitoring / targeting is a management technique in which all
plant/building utilities such as fuel, steam, electricity,
refrigeration, compressed-air, water, effluent are managed as
controllable resources (similalrly to that of Raw Materials,
finished product, Manpower)
M&T for energy involves
 Division of areas as cost centers
 Monitor utilities used in each area
 Compare energy used with production volume/no./etc.
occupancy or product sales.
 Set targets , observe variances & initiate remedial actions.
Typical M&T programs have been used as effective tool to
demonstrate the results of 5-20% savings realised.
ELEMENTS OF M & T System

 Recording –Measuring and recording

 Analysing – Correlating to output (Production Nos. or quantity)
 Comparing – Comparing to standard benchmark
 Setting Targets–to reduce or control consumption
 Monitoring-Comparing with set targets at regular intervals
 Reporting- Reporting results including variances from target
 Controlling-Implementing management measures
Typical details of M & T activity

 Checking energy invoices

 Energy Accounting
 Determining energy performance/efficiency
 Recording -Of projects intended to improve energy
efficiency
 Highlighting - performance problems or success

Relating energy consumption &
production-Graphing the Data
 What drives energy consumption?
– Production (or)
– Hours (or)
– Weather
 Collect energy consumption, energy cost and
production data
 Study and analyse the data to understand what is
happening.
 Graphs generally provide an effective means of
producing energy & production relationships
Use of Bar Chart
 Collect 24-months data and collate for 12
months of energy bills
 Most common aspect is to show energy per
month for this year and last year
 We need production data for the same 24/12
month period
Moving annual total-With >12 Months data
 Sum of the previous twelve months of data

 Covers full range of the seasons, holidays,

etc.,

Specific energy consumption(SEC)
 SEC chart alone will not give plant details

 A plot of production vs. SEC can reflect actual

scenario of energy efficiency.
 Higher the production--SEC is low.

 Low production level--SEC is high.

 This indicates that there might be fixed energy

consumption.For more understanding of
performance measurement an XY chart is plotted
