UNIT I INTRODUCTION TO CEMENT

AND CONCRETE (12)
PROPERTIES OF CEMENT

• Dry State:
– Smooth powder (particle size in microns) without
lumps
– Specific gravity about 3.15 - sinks in water
– Greyish Green - Uniform colour
– Cool and uniform when touched, fineness - 2250
mm2/gm of specific surface
PROPERTIES OF CEMENT

• Wet state: before setting

– Colour darkens
– Plastic (soft paste) before setting - Moulds /
Formwork - Easily workable
– Initial setting time not < 30 minutes, Final setting
time not > 10 hours
PROPERTIES OF CEMENT

• Hardened state: after setting

– Colour lightens
• Hydration process: chemical reaction
– Heat of Hydration - Curing
– Setting - products of setting:
• Tri-calcium silicate - 3CaO SiO2
• Di-calcium silicate - 2CaO SiO2
• Tri-calcium aluminates - 3CaO Al2O3
• Tetra-calcium alumino ferrite - 4CaO Al2O3 Fe2O3
