UNIT I INTRODUCTION TO CEMENT

AND CONCRETE (12)
INTRODUCTION TO CEMENT AND CONCRETE

Cement and concrete as building materials. Brief history of their

use through examples. Composition, manufacture, properties,
types and uses of cement. Tests for cement. Introduction to
cement mortar and plastering and their composition. Concrete
and its composition. Mix design. Nature of aggregates for mix
including classification, sources, shape, size, grading, sampling
and analysis. Proportioning, water-cement ratio, workability.
Stages in concrete construction- formwork, mixing, placing,
curing. Cement and concrete finishes including roughcast, dry
dash, textured, stucco. Water proofing and damp proofing of
concrete. Understanding of product literature. Site visits with
documentation in the form of sketches/ photos
TESTS FOR CEMENT

• Tests done as per IS 4031: 1988, IS 4032: 1985

• The usual tests made, on cement are:
• Fineness of cement Part 1, IS 4031: 1988
• Density (Specific Gravity) Part 11, IS 4031: 1988
• Soundness test Part 3, IS 4031: 1988
• Standard consistency of cement Part 4, IS 4031: 1988
• Setting time tests Part 5, IS 4031: 1988
• Compressive strength test Part 6, IS 4031: 1988
• Heat of Hydration Part 9, IS 4031: 1988
• Chemical (Composition) Analysis IS 4032: 1985
FINENESS OF CEMENT - By Dry Sieving

• Tests done as per Part 1 of IS 4031: 1996

• Fineness represent the particle size of cement
• It is done by sieving using 90 μm – cement
sample of 10 g – 2 minutes – closed lid –
weigh residue to nearest 0.1 g
• Fineness is represented as the ratio of residue
to total cement taken
• Lesser the ratio, finer the cement

DENSITY (SPECIFIC GRAVITY) OF CEMENT

• Tests done as per Part 11 of IS 4031: 1988

• Specific gravity or Density is a measure of
mass of cement
• It is done with Le Chatelier Flask
• Specific gravity of the cement should be 3.15
• Unit weight of cement is 1440 kg/m3

SOUNDNESS OF CEMENT

• Tests done as per Part 3 of IS 4031: 1988

• Soundness explains the expansion property of
cement – it is due to the excess lime content
• Soundness is expressed as expansion of test
mould in mm
• Tested with Le Chatelier apparatus (mould)
• Final value should be less than 10 mm
