HUSBANDRY PRACTICES FOR


CHICKEN – BROILERS AND
LAYERS

Learning outcomes:
To understand the purpose of this code in ensuring that
the farming practices of the establishment provide
confidence in consumers’ expectations that the final products
are safe and fit for human consumption.
Objective :
To set out general principles of good practice and
minimum requirements for the production, handling,
transportation and storage of chicken and its products
within the farm, in commercial or backyard rearing/farming
of broiler and layer chicken for food use.
What is chicken?
A domestic fowl that been kept for its eggs or
meat.
What is broiler?
 Are chicken raised specifically for meat.

What is layer chicken?


It is a chicken grown or kept primarily for laying
eggs.
Definition of terms
 Abnormal behavior – a changes that response to poor or wrong management practice causing stress.
 Authorized – permitted by the competent authority.
 Backyard Farm – farm or household raising at least one head of animal or bird.
 Commercial farm–large-scale or intensive production of livestock(poultry chicken 500layersor1000 broilers ).
 Competent authority- entity/agency who has the knowledge, expertise and authority as designated by law.
 Culled animals – undesirable animals eliminated from herd.
 Farm owner/ operator – legal entity who is responsible for the management and general operation of the farm.
 Farm worker/ personnel – persons engaged by the business on a full time, part-time or casual basis.
 Foot wear – outer covering for feet.
 Good health status – free from illness, injury or pain.
 Potable water- water that is free from diseases.
 Protected clothing– clothing especially designed to protect personnel against contamination and dangerous
working conditions.
 Qualified laboratories – laboratories that are registered with the competent authority.
 Ration – daily feed/diet of chickens.
 Rearing – the act of raising of chickens.
 Vehicle - any means of transportation.
5.1 Farm components:
1. Farm location/site selection – is the practice of finding a new or
another facility location .
2. Site History
3. Farm layout – refers to the compiling of physical structures.
4. Animal housing – any kind of shelter, refuge affording protection to
animals.
5. Storage Facilities – a building or structure used for storing raw
materials and other materials.
6. Holding pen for culled chickens – where livestock is temporarily
confined.
5.2 Feed, Veterinary inputs, and Water
1. Feeds and Veterinary inputs – the recommended food
and vitamins of a specific livestock.
2. List of banned chemicals and veterinary products –
products that are not approved or registered by a
competent authority available for viewing.
3. Water Quality and treatment of water – a safe water
should be provide to the chicken.

5.5 Transportation and Storage - is the process of
storing the chicks or chicken in the appropriate packaging or
restraining containers as required by the country regulations
while transporting.
5.6 Record Keeping - is a central way of effort to trace the
source of the problem and eliminate.
5.7 Egg Management – is a method of inspecting the eggs
and its proper sanitation in colleting eggs .
5.8 Review and Evaluation of Practices – a method to
checked for compliance and evaluation for effectiveness and
do-ability on regular basis.
