Reactivating and Boosting 2nd

Grader’s Knowledge and Skills

in Basic Mathematics: A 14-days
Tutorial

ALEXIS A. AGUILAR
Pre-Service Teacher
INTRODUCTION

Tutoring can help strengthen subject comprehension, boost confidence, and build important
learning skills. Tutoring gives students individualized attention that they don't get in a crowded
classroom. This helps children who struggle to keep up, as well as those who aren't challenged
enough. This presentation shows my 14-days Tutoring Session with my tutee, Cyril James Pascual and
his day-by-day improvements. In addition, this 14-days tutorial aims to:
 Boost the tutee’s skills and knowledge in basic Mathematics such as addition and subtraction.
 Activate his strength and weaknesses in solving math problems.
 Educate more and improve tutee’s existing knowledge
 Assess the understanding of the Learner’s about the topics and activities
 Evaluate and asses through assessments and observations .

Hello!
This is my Tutee, Cyril James Pascual. He is 8
years old and he has born on January 3, 2014
and currently a Grade 2 students in
Balintocatoc Integrated School. Cyril is my old
tutee last year he is my neighbor and close to
my family. He loves to dance and to sing . He
also love to play mobile games especially Mobile
Legends and Roblox. His favorite subject is

OBSERATIONS
Today is my first day of tutoring my Tutee. This day is tend to assess his existing knowledge and to know what is his
strength and weaknesses in solving basic mathematics. I gave him a motivation first which is I show and teach him
the song It’s math time in a Small world Tune. After that I gave him a pre-test to assess his knowledge and the first
activity I gave to him is the activity entitled as “Let’s count it!”.

Before giving him the test, I instructed him what to do and what is the purpose of this assessment test. At
first, he is so excited and told me that “Ate, di pa ba tayo mag mo-module?” and he want to use Ilocano language as
the medium of our communication and I let it be. At the beginning of the tutoring session he is so well- behave and
focused.

For the next activity I gave him is the 2 Minute Math addition, I let him answered it and just observe him. I gave him
almost an hour and he finished it in 45 minutes to compute all the addition problems that I gave to him in total of 48
items. I observed that he used his hand to compute the addition problem and I also observed that he has a lot of
mannerism and he struggles in answering some part of the test specially when the addends and the sum are the
same and when the item has need to do carry he is so confused even though I teach him how to do it correctly he is
still confused that is why in our next session I will teach it again to him and gave him activities that fits to his needs.
After that I let him answer everything until the time was up. I immediately checked her test and he got 45 correct
answers out of 48.

8
Here is my tutee’s mannerisms that I observed:
• He poke his pencil in his feet and suddenly stop answering.
• He didn’t stop moving (Hindi mapakali)
• He touches the curtain and play it.
• He bites his pencil.
• When someone comes, he is talking to the person unstoppable
• Hitting the table using his pencil.\
• He touches anything around him just like the pillow on the chair
• He put the pillow of the chair on his head.

With the result, I found out that it is a must for me to reactivate her knowledge and boost it more, for him to
master basic mathematics specially in those parts that he missed and he’s struggling. I need more patience
specially in dealing with his mannerism and help him to cope with it and to stop it.

Staring tomorrow we will having an assessment again specially in part that hard for him. And I am hoping for
him cooperation and willingness to learn, We ended our session exactly in 3:30 p.m. and start again in
answering his other modules.

OBSERATIONS
Today is my second day of tutoring my Tutee. This day is the extension of our pas assessment during the day one
because we’re run out of time. So this day is tend to boost my tutee’s weaknesses in addition. The first thing we did
is to review first what we’ve done in the first day and he said “May pinasagutan ka sakin, pero basic lang po yun” So I
gave him the easiest activity first which is the base ten blocks wherein he need to count the blocks in order to
compute ow many blocks are there. It This activity is to serve as motivation. It lasted for more than 15 minutes
before he finished the activity. But before giving him the activity, I instructed him what to do and what is the purpose
of this assessment test. We used Filipino language as the medium of our communication. In the first activity he is
well-behaved. But the problem is he didn’t wrote his name on his activity.

For the next activity I gave him is the Addition with two-digits and answered it easily, I gave him 25 items and when I
checked it he got 24 out of 25 items. While observing him, I didn’t observe that he has struggling anymore in adding
two digits number. Just like in the first day he is using his hands to add and compute numbers. As we go through the
in the next activity after twenty five minutes, he has a lot of reason just to make him go, I though he want to play
with his friends because he saw them outside playing and I tell him that we need to finish first the next activity
which is the hardest one which is He need to add three set of number. Because of his desire to end our class earlier
he focused on the next activity, I gave him 28 items and it took 45 minutes to finished it and surprisingly, he got all
the correct answer. But before we end our session last meeting I told him that to practice more and I ask him before
we end the session if he practice and he told me “Opo, nagpagawa ako kay mommy ng parehas na number tapos
sinagutan ko”.

Here is my tutee’s mannerisms that I observed:
• He didn’t stop moving (Hindi mapakali)
• He bites his pencil.
• When someone comes, he is talking to the person unstoppable

With the result, I found out that there is no need for me to teach more about addition to him because he already
mastered it.

Staring tomorrow we will move forward to subtraction. I am hoping for him cooperation and willingness to
learn, We ended our session exactly in 3:30 p.m. and start again in answering his other modules.

MOVING ON TO
SUBTRACTIONS

1:30 p.m. – 2:10 p.m.

17
OBSERATIONS

Today is my third day of tutoring my Tutee. This day we moving forward to the next topic which is subtraction. Today
I will going to assess first his knowledge about subtraction by giving him pre test. We use tagalog as a medium of our
communication. His mannerisms is still there. His knowledge in subtractions needs to boost more and need more
assistant because he didn’t master it yet. So at first I explain how to subtract after that I gave him the pre-test and
then he worried and said “Ate, tulungan mo ako aa tapos turuan mo ako kasi baka mali ako, magagalit si mommy ko,
huwag mo ako isusumbong” While observing him, I observe that he is struggling in subtracting and always asking for
guidance.

ASSESSMENT DAY
December

10:00 p.m. – 12:10
p.m.

23
24
Today is already our last day in tutoring session and it is also his examination day.
At 10:00 O’clock a.m. I already gave him his assessment, sets of 6 different
papers. I will give him enough time to answer all of the assessment. After giving
him his assessment I observed him and some of his mannerism are not existing
just like hitting the table, holding whatever on his surrounding, biting the pencil
but there is only one thing I observed which is he is so talkative even though he is
doing his thing. Today I will not going to help him and guide him even though he
is asking me to guide him.

As the time reached 12:10 pm, I collected already his paper and checked it
immediately. He was not able to perfect the test, but I can say that he did very
well. The result of his assessment (100 out of 144 ) proved that my 14-days of
tutoring him is effective. He was able to boost his prior knowledge regarding
basic mathematics such us addition and subtraction, He learned more, and
improved a lot better.

Hence, I can say that as his tutor and a pre-service teacher, I also did an
effective and great job.

25
26
CONCLUSION

Tutoring helps in strengthening subject comprehension, boosting

confidence, and building important learning skills of a learner. Since we are
in focused to our tutee, we can easily identify and properly address their
weaknesses. In this 14-days tutorial, I have a lot of realizations and
observation that it can be useful for me someday when I am going to handle
a class. It also helps me to train myself more in understanding about child’s
behavior.
As tutors and as a pre-service teachers, we should always be flexible
and we should make our learners feel safe and secure, to boost their
confidence and to improve their learning and comprehension.
