Definition of Health Information
:Standardization
• Health Information Standardization:

• Standardization, as defined by the International Organization for Standards (ISO), is the process of
agreeing on standards, which represent the common language that allows the exchange of data
between systems.

• It is set of rules or guidelines, format, or document that establishes uniform specifications, criteria,
methods, processes.
:Standard Categories
• In February 2006, the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) identified the
following health information technology standards categories:
• Data Standards.

• Functional Standards.

• Information Content Standards.

• Information Exchange Standards.

• Identifier Standards.

• Privacy and Security Standards.

• Definition:

• They are documented agreements on representations, formats, and definitions of common data.

Functional

• Definition:

• Functional Standards describe, in an organized format, for the participants and functional requirements are
derived from the description.

• Definition:

• Information Content Standards are related to the content of information exchanges.

Information Exchange
:Standards
• Definition:

• They define the structure and syntax of the electronic communication and are referred to as the
standard ways of sending and receiving information.

• They provide a universal method to identify entities such as an individual (consumer), a healthcare
provider, a healthcare organization, a payer, or others (clearinghouses, vendors, products, etc.).

• Standards implementation is a process of demonstrating the use of standards in an information

technology application.

Clinical Decision Support (CDS)

• Definition:

 Clinical decision support (CDS) provides clinicians, staff, patients or other individuals with
knowledge and information, intelligently filtered or presented at appropriate times, to enhance
health and health care.

• Why are the benefits of clinical decision support?

 CDS has a number of important benefits, including:

1. Increased quality of care and enhanced health outcomes.

2. Avoidance of errors and adverse events.

3. Improved efficiency, cost-benefit, and provider and patient satisfaction.


Clinical Decision Support Tools

• Definition:
 Clinical decision support tools are found in EHR software that when applied effectively, can
enhance patient care quality and outcomes, improve efficiency, and help to ensure regulatory
compliance.

Types of CDS Tools:


In general, clinical decision support tools can include, but are not limited to:
 Computerized alerts and reminders to care providers and patients.
 Clinical guidelines.
 Condition-specific order sets.
 Focused patient data reports and summaries.
 Documentation templates.
 Diagnostic support.
