Urbanization has brought social,
economic, cultural and enviormental
changes.
These changes are of two types:-
OPositive
ONegative
Positive Impacts
O Increase in improved housing facilities.
O Growth of educational and health facilities.
O Growth of service sectors which fetch higher
incomes.
O Increase in variety of job prospects.
O Availability of labour force.
O Increase in standard of living.
O Improved transport and communication facilities.
Negative Impacts
Because of urbanization there are many negative impacts
too. They are:-
O The large growth in population results in growth of people
who don’t live with permission and on top they don’t pay
rents, which lead growth of slum areas. A fun fact is that
the largest slum in Asia is Dharavi, Mumbai. Because of
this growth, large families live in small homes in slum.
Their homes lack proper sanitation, ventilation and
drinking water facilities.
O There is a rise in the value of land.
O With overpopulation and scarcity of land, the cost for
living rises. This can be seen across Delhi, Mumbai,
Bengaluru, Shangai and so on.
O With increase in population, the crime rate increases.
Cases of theft, cheating and other such incidents rise. If
the situation is unchecked and mismanaged, there is
worsening in civil laws.
O Overcrowded cities suffer from traffic congestion, and air,
water and land pollution. The urban waste thrown by us
goes in the water and makes the water no long safe for
drinking. A fun fact that unsafe water kills more people
each year than war and all other forms of violence
combined.
O Urban life is stressful. Everyone in the city wish to get all
the opportunities that the city gives. Because of this greed,
people get extremely busy in work. Busy life leaves no
free time or fun activities or taking care for one’s health.
Because of tension on their mind which in turn affects
their health and leads to rise in number of lifestyle disease,
Such as diabetes, migraines and so on.
