Unit 11

Computer Network
Assignment 2
Abdur - Rahman Shazad
Student No. 119512
Introduction
First Music have been in contact with me for help setting up a computer network for them. They don’t
have any computers in their workplace at the moment. They would appreciate a network of computers
that can connect to the internet, transfer documents to a central printer and upload and download new
and used music files. They want to be able to educate the new customers on how to use the computers,
printer and how to upload and download music files to their own personal USB storage devices. I will
need to go by the client requirements and i also need to calculate the expenses of buying the hardware
and software.
Purpose of the computer network
- To sell old & new music
- Allow customers to get online & download music in-store
- Teach people computer knowledge on how to download music
User Requirements
It has been decided that the following are required for the computer network:
Three high-spec computers - one computer to be used for sales and stock control, one computer for
downloading music and for use in the classes for people learning how to use MP3 players, and one computer
to be set up in the manager’s office.
An operating system and application software.
They will need at least five shared folders and seven shared files, with different access permissions for
different users.
At least one shared hardware network resource, e.g. a printer, a scanner,
an external storage device.
The store will have at least three network users, one of whom must be a network administrator with full control
over the computer network.
The network will have to be configured for the users, e.g. to be able to add more users, remove existing users,
change passwords(s), change access rights, set login restrictions, disable user accounts.
The setup of network utilities is also required, e.g. remote desktop, instant messaging, antivirus, and firewall.
All network users will be expected to have a username and password to access the computer network.
User Requirements in detail
Three high spec computers: One for sales & stock check. One for downloading music and for educational
purposes in the classes. And last computer for the manager's office.
Operating system & application software: Windows operating system to run the high spec computers. Also
microsoft Excel to keep count on the stock.
5 shared folders & 7 shared files: 5 folders & 7 files with different levels of access and it should be easily
accessible. Some for teaching, some for insights etc.
1 shared hardware network: A central printer will be set up for the invoices and reports of the shop.
3 network users: 1 main administrator, who is in control of the computer network.
Network has to be configured for the users: Important for adding other users, removing previous users,
changing passwords & access levels
Set up of network utilities: Such as remote desktop connection to mirror the screen for learners, instant
messaging to allow for quick communication & an antivirus application to limit threats to security. Also a firewall to
stop unauthorised access.
Networking Components

Server - A server is a piece of hardware that gives a service to another computer

program and the person using it (the client). It processes requests from a client.
An example of what a server can do is control access over a network.

Workstation - A workstation is a specialised computing device that is designed for

technical or scientific applications. It has a mighty CPU (Central Processing Unit),
large storage capabilities and advanced graphics.
Networking Components
Wireless Access Point - A networking device that lets wireless devices connect to a network that is wired.
This is much easier than using cables. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio
signal and transmits it using an antenna.

Hub - A network hub is a node that broadcasts data to every computer or Ethernet-based device
connected to it. A hub is less sophisticated than a switch, it can isolate data transmissions to specific
devices. Network hubs are best suited for small, simple local area network (LAN) environments

Switch - Connects devices in a network to one another. Lets them talk. Multiple data cables are plugged
into a switch to enable communication between different networked devices. This can be used with
devices such as printers, computers, servers etc.
Networking Components

Router - A router is a device that sends data packets between computer networks.
routers carry out directing functions on the internet. Data transferred through the
internet, like web pages or an email is in the form of data packets.

Network Interface Card - A NIC is a computer expansion card that is used for
connecting to a network. It is used via ethernet cable. This can be connected to a
switch. You can also get wireless ones which may be more convenient.
How they connect and communicate

The switch is connected to the NIC (Network Interface Card) of the computers via
ethernet cable. You can connect multiple computers to a switch which allows them
to talk to each other. A printer can also be connected to the switch to allow the
devices to access the same printer. A server can also be connected to the switch
which lets you share data and also to share user accounts. A router is also
connected to the switch to allow all computers to access the internet.

If you wanted to go wireless then you can use radio waves from the WAP
(Wireless Access Point) which will therefore eliminate the need for wires.
Software Resources
Operating System - Windows or macOS. I would use windows as it is more affordable, easier to upgrade and is also
compatible with more software.

Windows office package - This is needed for applications such as microsoft word for documents, excel for
spreadsheets, powerpoint to present presentations which may make it easier for learners to understand etc. Google
could also be a option as it has most of the software built in and is easily accessible. I would pick google because it is
free to use therefore costing less for the company.

Antivirus - This helps protects online by scanning the device for threats & it deletes any threats for the user. When it is
installed it runs in the background giving live updates of any safety issues for your device. A good example of antivirus
software is McAfee.
Software resources

Gmail - Communication between clients and the company. Invoices if payment is

required. Also for receiving updates easily & answering any questions from people
who may be interested.

Google Chrome - A type of web browser that has lots of software packages
installed onto it such as classroom, docs, slides and many more. I would use
chrome as it is faster compared to other web browsers and has a much more
better view.

Music Software - Windows media player or you can use iTunes for the music
needs.
