ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT
What is Organizational Development?

Meaning:
 Organization development can be defined as a
technique for bringing change in the organization
rather than focusing attention on individuals.
 Organization development is a systematic
process for applying behavioral sciences principles
and practices in organization to increase individual
and organizational effectiveness.
ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT
IN TCS

Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is a global IT

services, business solutions and outsourcing company
headquartered in Mumbai, India.

Over the past decade, TCS has grown dramatically,

doubling its revenues every two years, and is on the verge
of becoming a billion-dollar company.
At TCS, OD has contributed immensely towards redefining the organization’s
relationship to its markets, key stake holders and environment. To add to this OD
brought about a drastic change on the cultural perspective.

In the years 1998-99, despite the fact that TCS had emerged as the largest
Indian software company it still suffered on its operational side.

 The expertise was diffused and in order to meet the needs the employees were
rotated across domains and skills. A lot of emphasis was paid to the Voice of
the Customer, in comparison to the Voice of employees.

What is Diagnosis of an organization ?

 Business diagnosis is a process of working backwards to

identify reasons for unsatisfactory performance by
making the appropriate links between causes and effects.
Thus, it is a process of identifying the symptoms or causes
to a problem.

 The diagnosis phase in organization is often regarded as

an overall organizational development process, but
commonly known as consulting process. The purpose of a
diagnosis is to identify problems facing the organization
and to determine their causes so that management can
plan solutions.
Process of organization development
OD interventions or techniques

Sensitivity Training
Grid Training
Survey Feedback
Process Consultation
Team Building
Management by Objectives
 Sensitivity training refers to one of the organizational
development techniques which through counseling methods works on
increasing employee well-being, self-awareness of an individual's own
prejudices and sensitivity towards the employees. Sensitivity training
helps employees to be more sensitive and accepting of the existing
diversity in the workplace. It enhances understanding between
members of the organization and enables building good interpersonal
relationships with other team members.

 Grid training is a comprehensive and systematic Organizational

Development program which aims at individuals, groups, and the
organization as a whole. The aim is to increase managers' concerns for
both production and people, thereby improving organizational
effectiveness.
 Survey Feedback is a systematic and well organized technique of
OD.
Survey feedback involves these steps
1. Collection of data
2. Feedback of information
3.Developing action plan
4.Follow up-

 Process Consultation-Process consultation (PC) is the creation of a

relationship with the client that permits the client to perceive,
understand and act on the process events that occur in the
client's internal and external environment in order to improve the
situation as defined by the client. It focuses attention on the
interpersonal and inter-group problems.
 Team building is the process of helping the work group to become more
effective in accomplishing its tasks and in satisfying the needs of group
members.
For example problem solving, listening, and organizing are essential
team building skills. The purpose of these skills is to support teamwork
and team development.

 Management By Objectives uses a set of quantifiable or objective

standards against which to measure the performance of a company and
its employees. By comparing actual productivity to a given set of
standards, managers can identify problem areas and improve
efficiency.
For example, if you work in customer service, your goals could be to
increase customer satisfaction by 13% and reduce customer call times
by two minutes.
Case Study:
Introduction:
• Advanced Chemical India Corporation (ACI) is founded in 1982 by
current owner & president, Mr. Gupta. ACI’s overall sales turnover in
2000 hit US$800 million and profit is US$30 million before tax.
• ACI originally started producing basic chemical products that are used
in clothes.
• They have three plants in India and sales offices in US, UK, Hong
Kong.
• About 2160 employees are hired. Their organization organized by
functions. There are 160 employees in HQ, 1500 in production with
production engineering, 400 in sales in various branches, and 100 in
R&D. HQ covers marketing and corporate functions as Finance, IT,
Legal, Purchasing, HR etc..
• ACI uses patents licensed by UK chemical companies.
Business Issues
• Global competition around ACI is getting severer. Now for low cost
(basic) product, ACI is competing with Chinese companies and for high
end (modified) products competitors are US/European/Japanese
chemical companies.
• As a result of severe competition, though the sales has increased by
5%, the profit has decreased by 20% last year. Both commodity and
specialty (high end) chemicals divisions are reducing profits.
• Mr. Gupta wants to transform ACI, review its business model and lift
ACI into the next era of growth.
• Therefore he decided to transform ACI from functional to business unit
base organization ( basic chemical and specialty/modified chemical units).
Also he wants to reorganize HQ
and R&D to more value oriented organization.
• Currently Job based pay and incentives with profit share (for total ACI
profit) are used.
• Mr. Gupta also feels the necessity to change these according to the
organization change

Question :

 Organization recommended for ACI?
