SPREADSHEET
APPLICATION
LEARNING COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES(MELCS)

• Familiarize the most commonly used functions

in Microsoft Excel
• Use several conditional functions available in
Microsoft Excel
• create an original or derivative ICT content to
effectively communicate or present data or
information related to specific professional
tracks
SPREADSHEET TERMINOLOGY
• SPREADSHEET • CELL
• WORKBOOK • ROW
• WORKSHEET • COLUMN
• FORMULA • RANGE
• FUCNTION
SPREADSHEET TERMINOLOGY
• Spreadsheet - Electronic sheet of
paper organized by columns &
rows.
• Workbook - The document itself
is called the workbook. A
workbook may contain several
worksheets depending on the
need of users.
• Worksheet - while an excel
worksheet is only a portion of a
workbook. You work in a
worksheet inside a workbook.
SPREADSHEET TERMINOLOGY
• Cell - A cell is a rectangular
box in which user may input
data. A cell may contain text,
numbers, images, formulas
or functions. Each cell also
has a specific name based
on its Row Number and
Column Letter.
Example: Cell B2 is located
under column B and Row 2
SPREADSHEET TERMINOLOGY
• Row - horizontal
arrangement of cells,
named using row numbers

• Column - vertical
arrangement of cells,
named using column letters

SPREADSHEET TERMINOLOGY
Range - a group of
selected cells. named
using the format First
Cell : Last Cell,
exampleB2:D5

Two Additional Parts of MS Excel
Name Box - part wherein the name of
your selected cell will appear. It also
shows the range of cells you have
selected if you are trying to select a
big portion of your worksheet.

Formula Bar - Is the long rectangular

text box wherein you will input your
data. You can also use this formula bar
to input text data in your selected cell.

Formula

Formula is an expression that calculates the

value of a cell. User must input variables
needed for a specific formula and the
spreadsheet does all the work after. On the
other hand, a function is a predefined formula
wherein user will only input needed variable
for a more complex formula.
Formula

In Excel, there are four types of operators for

the formula or function to be used and they
are categorized based on the four
classifications below:
1. ARITHMETIC OPERATORS
2. COMPARISON OPERATORS
3. TEXT CONCATENATION OPERATORS
4. REFERENCE OPERATORS
ARITHMETIC OPERATOR
Arithmetic Operators- are operations used in
mathematical calculations.
COMPARISON OPERATORS
Comparison Operators - These are operators used to compare
two values. The output of these operators can either be TRUE
or FALSE
TEXT CONCATENATION
Text Concatenation - This type of operator is used in joining or
connecting two or more words to create a single output. Text
concat operator may be used in joining segments of name.
Use the ampersand (&) to join, or concatenate, one or more
text strings to produce a single piece of text.
REFERENCE OPERATOR
Combine ranges of cells for calculations with
these operators.
