INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

somebody / someone = alguien (afirmatives)


anybody / anyone = alguien, cualquier persona,
questions and negatives)
nobody / no one = nadie
everybody / everyone = todos, todo el mundo

 Difference between someone y anyone
 As with some y any, both can be used in questions The difference is that someone is more positive –
when we think that the answer will be yes .

 Is there someone in the waiting room? (Creo que sí hay alguien.)

 Has anyone figured out the answer to the last question? (No sé si alguien sabe la respuesta.)

 Can someone help me move the sofa? (Quiero respuesta positiva.)

 Will anyone be at the office on Christmas Eve? (No lo sé.)


Everybody / everyone es “todo el mundo”, y nobody / no one es “nadie”.

 Sarah’s really nice. Everybody loves her.

 Everybody who goes to Paris thinks it’s a really beautiful city.

 Nobody ya es negativo, así que no va con negación.

 It was sad. Nobody came to my birthday party.

 Nobody wants to date him. He’s a jerk, and he’s ugly.


Difference between anybody y nobody

If you use anybody como “nadie”, use a negative structure: isn’t, wasn’t, didn’t etc.
There wasn’t anybody I could ask for help.
He didn’t know anybody at the party.
We’ve received a lot of CVs, but we haven’t interviewed anybody yet.
Nobody suena más negativo o más triste.
Nobody loves me. I guess I’m just going to die alone.
Nobody helped me when I needed it. I guess I just don’t have any friends.
No one cares about your opinion, Bobby. Just shut up!
Everybody and everyone are singular

 Everybody is really happy with the new boss.

 Everyone knows Maria, and everyone likes her.

 Nobody cares what Tom thinks.

 No-one is interested in continuing with the project.

 Todas las cosas: Everything you bought is in the fridge.

 Alguna cosa: There’s something in my eye.

 Alguna cosa en pregunta: Is there anything you’d like to say?

 Ninguna cosa (nada): There’s nothing in the box. It’s empty.

 Todos los sitios: I looked for a hotel room, but everywhere was booked.

 Algún sitio: I’d like to go somewhere this summer.

 Algún sitio en pregunta: Is there anywhere that serves a good mojito near here?

 Ningún sitio: There’s nowhere to eat sushi around here.
