INTRODUCTION

 Have you ever noticed that all the smart buildings recently coming up around
the world are characterised by an innovative, futuristic design? It’s not just
about the look, there’s a deeper explanation for it.
 Architect James Law coined the term ‘Cybertecture’ to identify the blend of
architecture, environmental design, innovative engineering and intelligent
systems needed to meet people’s needs and draw up a new urban
environment.

 “In this 21st Century, buildings will be different from 20th Century; they are
no longer about concrete, steel and glass, but of the new intangible materials
of technology, multimedia, intelligence and interactivity. Only recognizing
this will bring a new form of architecture to light – namely a Cybertecture.”

 An example of Cybertecture building is The Egg, at the heart of the business

district in Mumbai, the most populous city in India and ninth most populous
urban area in the world.
DETAILS OF THE STRUCTURE

THE CONCEPT

 The concept of this building, designed by James Law himself for the client
Wadhwa Developers, is to be a building unlike any other, something
completely different from existing architecture. It was inspired by the idea of
planets as sustainable natural ecosystems that grow and allow life to evolve
with it over time, to provide people with the best environment possible to live
and work in. It is intended as a symbol of optimism about the future.
THE DESIGN

  The 32,000 sq m egg-shaped building will accommodate 13 floors of offices

bringing together “iconic architecture, environmental design, intelligent
systems, and new engineering to create an awe-inspiring landmark in the
city.”

 Within the building, there will be a series of innovative systems such as

‘cybertecture health’ which is designed to keep track of the inhabitant’s health
including blood pressure and weight. The data collected may be retrieved and
sent to a doctor if deemed necessary.

 You do not like the view from your window? Well, in this building you can
customize your favorite view and have real time scenery from all around the
world instead of the view you currently have. Technology and the working
environment are united in the use of ‘cybertecture reality’ which allows you to
do this.
AMENITIES

 Health. Restrooms are designed to electronically monitor workers’ health

through indicators such as vital signs, weight and blood pressure, that can be
signaled to doctors if judged necessary.

 Augmented Reality. People can customize their office view by choosing a

virtual real time scenery from all around the world to be shown on their office
windows, to always feel relaxed and at their ease.

 Intelligent Building Management System. The building is designed to

automatically reduce energy use in less utilized areas and rooms.
DIAGRID STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

 The diagrid structural system can be defined as a diagonal members formed as

a framework made by the intersection of different materials like metals,
concrete or wooden beams which is used in the construction of buildings and
roofs.

 Diagrid structures of the steel members are efficient in providing solution

both in term of strength and stiffness. But nowadays a widespread application
of diagrid is used in the large span and high rise buildings, particularly when
they are complex geometries and curved shapes.
INTERIORS

 In the 21st Century, buildings will be different from 20th Century. They are no
longer about concrete, steel and glass, but also the new intangible materials of
technology, multimedia, intelligence and interactivity. Only recognizing this
will bring a new form of architecture to light, namely a Cybertecture.
IT IS GREEN

  The egg itself is orientated and skewed at an angle to create both a strong

visual language and to alleviate the solar gain of the building, also there is a
sky garden on the top of building which performs thermolysis (the dissipation
of heat from the surface). PV panels will be installed on top of the building
and a wind turbine on the sky gardens will generate electricity. A water
filtration system will also be incorporated into the building to recycle grey
water for flushing and irrigation purpose.

 A garden atop regulates the temperature using natural vegetation. Roof top
wind turbines also helps in self-sustainability along with Greywater recycling
system which will harvest water for irrigation and landscaping.
EGG SHAPE

  By using this “Egg” shape, compared to a conventional building, the

structure has approximately 10-20% less surface area. Within the building, an
innovative structure derived from the skin of the egg creates up to 30m spans
of column less floors. The architecture is sleek and computer designed, with
engineering that creates a building of high quality and geometric
sophistication.

 This building will act like a “jewel” for the new Central Business District of
Mumbai, and a worthy neighbor to the esteemed neighboring buildings of the
district. Also within, innovative Cybertecture Technologies empower people
to work in a better way.
ARCHITECT

 Architect: James Law, From Hong Kong.

 A brief discussion with James Law, the Chief Cybertech & Chairman of James
Law Cybertecture International on this unique project.

 What led to the inception of this structure?

My concept for this structure was to create something never yet done in
conventional architecture...to create a structure in the form of a shell that is
able to support floor plates that does not need any columns. This will allow
commercial space to have no obstructions to tenants to use the space...truly
affording 100% flexibility. The structure solution came from a study of
geometry and nature, where we can see organic symmetrical forms allows for
exceptionally stable and interesting...and embodies a level of beauty more
akin to nature than architecture. In reality, this is a piece of
Cybertecture...because it is designed beyond architecture.
CONCLUSION

 This is an example of how architecture need not be restricted solely to the

physical attributes of a building, but it’s becoming a mix of design and
intelligent systems to give people the best place to work and live in,
improving both their experience and the environment around them. That’s
exactly what being a smart building means.
