 That kamma’s
not well-made
from which
there is remorse,
of which one senses
the result
with weeping and
a tear-stained face.

While residing Jetavana Monastery

in Sàvatthi, the Buddha spoke
业力不善，由此而生
this verse, with reference

 One night some thieves robbed the
houses of some rich merchants and
escaped, their bags full of money and
valuables. When they reached a field
outside of the town, they stopped to
count and divide their loot. In their Savatthi or Sravasti where
haste to flee the area, however, they the Buddha preached the
inadvertently left behind a small bag First Sermon.

 The next day, early in the morning, the
Buddha surveyed the world, and seeing
that a certain farmer had entered His
mind of vision, He considered within
Himself what would happen.
That early morning the farmer went to
plough his field where the stolen bag
was left by the thieves. The Buddha was
passing by with the Venerable Ananda at
that time. Seeing the Buddha, the farmer
went and paid obeisance to the Buddha.
The Buddha had noticed the stolen bag.
第二天一早，佛陀普视世界，看到某个
农夫进入了他的眼中，他在心里思考着
会发生什么。那天一大早，农夫到他的
地里去耕种偷来的袋子被小偷留下的地
方。 佛陀与尊者阿难经过。 农夫见佛，
便去礼佛。 佛陀注意到了偷来的袋子。

 The Buddha said to the Venerable Ānanda,
“Look at that Ānanda, a poisonous snake!” “I
see, Venerable Sir, a deadly, poisonous snake
indeed!” Ananda replied.
The farmer heard this conversation between
The Buddha and Ananda. He said to himself,
“I will kill the snake.” So saying, he took a
stick and went to the spot to check. He came
upon the bag with valuables. “The Buddha
must have referred to this bag,” he thought.
Not knowing exactly what to do about it, he
laid the bag aside, covered it with some soil,
and went to resume his plowing.
佛告阿难尊者：“看阿难，毒蛇！” “原来如
此，大人，果然是一条致命的毒蛇！” 阿难答
道。 农夫听到了佛陀和阿难的对话。 他对自
己说：“我会杀了那条蛇。” 说着，他拿了一
根棍子，到现场查看。 他发现了那袋贵重物品。
“佛陀一定提到了这个袋子，”他想。 他不
知道该怎么办，就把袋子放在一边，盖上一些
泥土，继续耕作。

When the rich merchant victims discovered
the thefts, they managed to trail the thieves
to the field. Upon coming near to the spot
where the thieves had divided their stolen
valuables, the victims of the thefts saw the
footprints of the farmer. The footprints led
them to the farmer’s land where the bag
was loosely buried. They removed the earth
and picked up the bag. Thereupon they
reviled the farmer, saying, “So you robbed
our houses, and here you are plowing the
field!” And after having given him a good
beating, they took him before the king to
have justice done.
当富商受害者发现盗窃案后，他们设法将
小偷追踪到了现场。 走近盗贼分割被盗财
物的地点后，被盗者看到了农夫的脚印。
脚印把他们带到农夫的土地上，袋子被松
散地埋在那儿。 他们移开泥土，拿起袋子。

When the king heard what had happened,
he ordered the farmer to be put to death.
As the farmer walked along and the king’s
men lashed him with whips, he kept
repeating the words, “See, Ānanda, a
poisonous snake!” “I see, Venerable, a
deadly, poisonous snake!” Not another
word did he utter. The king’s men asked
him, “You are repeating words of the
Buddha and of the Venerable Ānanda.
What does this mean?”
The farmer replied, “I will say, if I am
permitted to see the king.”

国王听说发生了什么事，就下令处死农夫。 农
夫走着，国王的手下用鞭子抽打他，他不停地
重复着这句话：“看，阿难，一条毒蛇！”
“原来如此，尊者，一条致命的毒蛇！” 他没
有再说一个字。 国王的人问他：“你在重复佛
陀和阿难尊者的话。 这是什么意思？” 农夫
回答说：“我会说，如果我被允许见国王的

 When the farmer was brought to the
king , he told the king, “I am not a thief,
Your Majesty.” The farmer told the king
the whole story. The king took the
farmer to the Buddha, and asked the
Lord about this. The Buddha said, “Yes,
Oh King, I said those words the farmer
uttered when I went there. After the
Buddha explained what really
happened, the King let the poor
innocent farmer go.
Then to everyone present,
the Buddha said:
当农夫被带到国王面前时，他告诉国王：
“我不是小偷，陛下。” 农夫把整个故事
告诉了国王。 国王带着农夫去见佛陀，就
此事向世尊询问。 佛陀说：“是的，大王，
我去那里时说的是农夫所说的话。 佛陀解
释真相后，国王放走了可怜的无辜农夫。然
后佛陀对在场的每一个人说：

“Let this be a lesson to all of you. A man should not
do anything that would bring him remorse and
sadness.”
