TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
AT TESLA
TESLA INC.
Tesla Motors Inc. is an automotive company, which was
established in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers who
wanted to develop electric vehicles. More specifically, Tesla
Motors was founded by Elon Musk (founder of PayPal), Marc
Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard. In addition, Sergey Brin and
Larry Page (the founders of Google) are among its investors
(Musk, 2006).
In 2006, when the co-founder and current CEO of Tesla Motors
Elon Musk was asked about their strategy, stated: “The starting
point is a high performance sports car, but the long term vision is
to build cars of all kinds, including low cost family vehicles”
(Hamilton, 2006).
WORKING AT TESLA
Tesla’s mission : “Hire the world’s best and brightest people to
help make this future a reality.”
 Tesla Motors is committed to hiring and developing top talent
from across the world for any given discipline.
 Tesla has satellite offices in Los Angeles and Amsterdam plus
over one hundred retail and service locations around the world.
Employees work in small, focused teams that are agile,
efficient and focused on excellence.
Expectation : The pace is fast, the work is stimulating,
structure is limited and innovation.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Tesla ensures all employees are trained adequately to Tesla Performance
standards. Anyone not capable of achieving the standards will be either asked to
leave or get demoted to Peon status.
Employee must have a genuine passion for producing the best vehicles in the
world. Without passion, they will find what company is trying to do too difficult.
Tesla START is an intensive training program designed to provide students
across North America with the skills necessary for a successful career with Tesla
—at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. During the program, students
will develop technical expertise and earn certifications through a blended
approach of in-class theory, hands-on labs and self-paced learning.
 Tesla employees receive free high-deductible health-insurance
plans, preventive care, preventive prescriptions and birth control. The
wellness programs don't force specific behavior changes but, instead, "capture
what employees are already doing and prop that up.“
Regardless of your views of Tesla’s future success, the
company has developed a fascinating multi-pronged
strategy for fundamentally changing an industry. The core
strategy has unique elements at each level of the
ecosystem: overturning the core product architecture,
positioning themselves in key bottleneck components, and
resolving system-level limitations that slow the adoption of
the technology. At the same time, they have applied an
effective approach to build their innovation capital so they
can win the resources and support to execute on their
vision.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the data collected for this study and on the analysis
that was carried out the following conclusions can be drawn.
Initially, the strategy of Tesla Motors is to apply product
innovation by designing innovative vehicles and process
innovation by combining multiple know hows deriving from
different companies. Therefore, Tesla Motors can be
considered as an innovative company.
In addition, Tesla Motors applies open innovation and its
coupled process by establishing R&D collaborations with
major companies. That way, it manages to further develop its
innovative technologies.
