WHAT IS SINGLE PARENTING?
• A single parent is a person who lives with a child or children
and does not have a wife, husband or live-in partner.
• A single parent may have either sole custody of the child or
joint physical custody.
TYPES OF PARENTAL CUSTODY
• Sole Legal Custody
• Sole Physical Custody
• Joint Physical Custody(shared physical custody)
SOLE CUSTODY
• Sole Legal Custody: is a special type of child custody arrangement in
which only one parent or person is granted both physical and legal
custody of the child or children.
• Sole Physical Custody: the child or children are under the supervision
of one parent or person, but can get visitation by other parent unless
the court determines otherwise.
JOINT PHYSICAL CUSTODY
• Joint Physical Custody(shared physical custody): Means that the
child spends a considerable amount of time living with both parents,
and both have equal responsibility to physically care for the child or
children.
EXAMPLES:
• Mother and Father have divorced due to Father's substance abuse and addiction. Mother
seeks and is granted ____custody of Child. This means that Mother alone has legal authority
to decide key issues related to Child's upbringing, and Child will live exclusively with
Mother. Father may be entitled to visitation with Child.
• Every Sunday little Timmy is switching from his mothers house to his fathers house. He
spends every week with each one of them. On holidays, his parents decide who he gets to
spend the holidays with.
• Little Timmy’s mom recently hasn’t been the best mom to both his father and him. His dad
isn’t going to take any of her bad habits anymore. He took his case to court and now has
both physical and legal custody of little Timmy.
