Research Question: Research question : How can we use
assessment tools to manage reading
activities?

Importance: In primary schools, assessment tools

(formative, summative) have to be utilised correctly
to improve reading skills. Students cannot reach their
full potential unless they develop reading skills.

How often should reading assessment be conducted?

Does performing continuous reading assessments

increase students reading skills?
• TP was conducted in Emirates National
school in Alain City.
• The school has KG to grade 12 level.
• We followed KG2 classes.

Description of • Each class has around 25 students, there

was 7 classes (A-E)

research context • The students were from different

nationalities with majority of Emirati and

and participants
other Arab nationalities as well as few
nonarable students.
• The students contained an almost equal
mix of males and females in every class.
A. Description and
rationale for data
collection tools:
Data collection was via digital survey to 7 teachers ( mainly literature) on that grade
(KG2)

Used Survey monkey to collect and analyze data.

The 7 teachers were anonymous to reduce bias.

To avoid the statistics being skewed by the group, each survey was completed
independently.

The questions were designed to gather information on the study question.

Because we were interested in the percentages in their responses, our technique was a
combination of quantitative and qualitative. Also included were open-ended questions.
B. Description and rationale
for data collection tools:

• Observation is another data collection tool we

utilized.
• We watched the classes everyday for 2 months and
seeing how the teacher implements formative
assessment for reading was a good way to compare
their answers' to their practice in class.
• This method is qualitative and enables us to
discover the real application of formative and
summative assessment in class reading.
Presentation of data (samples of raw data)
Sample Data:
I asked the teachers to specify their summative
assessment tools.
2 teachers said they use random reading selection at end
of class.
4 teachers said they use exit ticket

read and hear from the story.
Developing:

must cut and past the pitcher in correct
place.
Emergent :
•Assessment about the story the very

•Emergent : students ordered the life cycle
of butterfly and they try to write and read
the words in papers.

formative assessment of reading has a positive

of data
It pushes the child to try and read as well as increase
the understanding of the subject.

Teachers agree with the importance of reading

assessment as they implement diagnostic
assessment every semester, and compare the
improvement of the student accordingly.

Students improvement in reading skills vary because

of individual differences between students.

Question\Methodology
Another methodology which can be used is to compare 2
groups of students from the same level where one group
What are the most would used formative assessment of reading and the other
effective assessment used summative assessment and then compare their reading.

strategies to manage
reading activities?
The assessment would be in the same lessons and same level
of difficulty to get the most accurate data.

Another methodology that can be used is individual interviews

with teachers to get more details. As well as taking video of
the reading level of students at the beginning of the semester.
