INTRODUCTION

 The work output depends on the energy input. Energy can be

defined as the ability to do work.

NON CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCE

 Non-conventional sources are also known as renewable sources of energy. Examples of

non-conventional sources of energy include solar energy, bioenergy, tidal energy and wind
energy.

 Renewable energy is important because of the benefits it provides:

 Environmental Benefits

 Sustainability

 Economical

 Reduce Import
HISTORY

 There is brief history of Non conventional energy sources such as :

 SOLAR PV CELL was discovered by Edmond Becqerel in 1839.

 WIND MILL was invented by Daniel Halladay in 1854.

 HYDROPOWER PLANT was invented by William Armstrong in 1878.

 Bhadla Solar Park is the largest solar park in the world stablish
in India with capacity of 2245 MW.

 Tsutomu Miyasaka was change the world of solar power

by inventing solar perovskite cell .
TYPES
 There are various types of Non conventional energy sources :

SOLAR WIND

HYDROPOWER GEOTHERMAL

BIOMASS
SOLAR ENERGY
 Solar energy (light or heat ) that comes from sun is mainly use in two
forms –

 SOLAR THERMAL: using sun’s energy to heat things like house, water,
food etc.

 SOLAR ELECTRIC: convert sun’s light into electricity using solar

panels.
SOLAR ENERGY DEVICES

 SOLAR WATER HEATER: This device heats water, using sun energy.

 SOLAR PERVOSKITE: It is most advance form of pv cells based on

perovskite structure with 29% efficiency.

 SOLAR PANEL: Converts sun’s heat into electricity, using solar panel. It
made by array of solar module, which develop by solar cells.

 Efficiency of solar panel is 15-22%.

ADVANTAGES

 It is renewable source of energy.

 It is ecofriendly.

 It has various applications.

 It has low maintenance cost.

 It reduces electricity bill.

DISADVANTAGES

 High initial cost.

 Weather dependent.

 Use a lot space.

 Low energy conversion rate.

 Energy storage is expensive.

WIND ENERGY

 Here wind is use for generate mechanical power or electricity by using wind
mill.
 Efficiency of wind mill is 20-40%.
 A minimum speed of wind for generating electricity is 10km/hr.
ADVANTAGES

 Clean and renewable form of energy.

 Wind power is cost effective.

 There is lack of pollution .

 It has low operational cost.

 It is space efficient.
DISADVANTAGES

 It makes noise.

 Wind doesn’t always blow.

 Expensive to stall.

 Power storage is not so easy.

 Threads for birds.

HYDROPOWER
 Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is one of the oldest and largest sources of
renewable energy.
 It generates power by using a dam or diversion structure to alter the natural
flow of a river or other body of water.
 Modern hydro turbines can convert as much as 90% of the available energy
into electricity.
ADVANTAGES

 Clean source of energy.

 They work on extremely large scale.

 Relatively high efficiency.

 Long service life.

 Fairly cheap for per unit production.

DISADVANTAGES

 Large amount of initial investment.

 Long planning and construction time.

 Dam construction forces people to leave there homes.

 A large amount of land needs to be flooded.

GEOTHERMAL

 Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because heat is continuously

produced inside the earth. People use geothermal heat for bathing, to heat
buildings, and to generate electricity.
TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL PLANT
 DIRECT DRY STEAM: Steam plants use hydrothermal fluids that are primarily
steam. The steam goes directly to a turbine, which drives a generator that produces
electricity.

 FLASH AND DOUBLE FLASH CYCLE: Hydrothermal fluids above 360°F

(182°C) can be used in flash plants to make electricity. If any liquid remains in the
tank, it can be flashed again in a second tank (double flash) to extract even more
energy.
 BINARY CYCLE: Most geothermal areas contain moderate-temperature
water (below 400°F). Energy is extracted from these fluids in binary-cycle
power plants.

 Because this is a closed-loop system, virtually nothing is emitted to the

atmosphere
ADVANTAGES

 Enviromental friendly.

 No fuel required.

 Plentyful supply.

 Increadible for heating and cooling.

 It is relatively cheap compared to any other sources.

DISADVANTAGES

 Geothermal reservoirs can not easily be found.

 High initial cost.

 It is not a large scale production.

 Still require electricity to work.

BIOMASS
 Biomass is widely available in many forms.
 Biomass energy is less expensive to produce than fossil fuels.
 Using biomass as an energy source reduces garbage in landfills.
 Since biomass only releases the CO2 that it captures, it’s 100% carbon neutral.
ADVANTAGES

 It is renewable energy.

 Less dependency on fossil fuels.

 The availability of biomass fuel is universal.

 There is minimal environmental impact.

 It can convert waste into energy.

DISADVANTAGES

 It requires transport.

 Some methane and CO2 are emitted during production.

 Cutting trees for fuel wood can lead to deforestation.

 Biomass is not as efficient as fossil fuels.
