 There is need to clarify exactly what an attitude
actually is
 They are frequently assessed without a
complete understanding of their characteristic
therefore it is more useful to examine its
components.

 COMPONENTS OF ATTITUDE
 1. Affective
 It concerns the feelings we may have and
emotions about people, objects and issues likes
and dislikes of people, objects and issues.
 2. Behavioral
 It refers to the tendencies we have to behave in
a certain way.
 It is concerned to our actions towards others.

 DEFINITION OF ATTITUDE
 It is an organized and consistent manner of
feeling and reaction towards people, issues,
groups or an event in one’s environment.
 DEVELOPMENT OF ATTITUDE
 The process of coping and adjusting to the
social environment creates attitude.
 Many but not all attitudes are formed during
childhood

contributes to which attitude will be adapted to a
particular event.
 The most social system that surrounds as with
its many races, religion and classes has
influenced the kind of attitude we have adapted.
 There are three ways to forming attitude and
these are: -

 1. Instrumental Conditioning
 It involves rewarding and punishment.
- Rewarding= good attitude.
- Punishment=bad attitude.
 As the years go by the individual may gradually
be influenced by parents, immediate family
members and schoolmates also the mass
media.

 Attitude can be acquired through observing the
action of others.
 Children are continually look up to adults and
others for information on how to behave.
 3. Direct Experience
 For someone to develop an attitude towards a
certain object or issue, situation, person there is
need for direct experience.
 The experience can be positive and negative.

 1. Family:
 It is an agent of socialization
 It has a great influence on attitude development.
 2. Peer Groups:
 People tend to spend more time with groups of
equals.
 During this time they meet different attitudes of
their friends from which one may learn.

 It is passed from one generation to the other.
 It gives identity to members of society
 It includes values, ideas and customs of groups
of people
 These will influence the attitude.
 4. Religion:
 It provides a social control in regards to moral
behavior norms; values and beliefs for a certain
religion determine the attitude.

 Young people can’t build attitude as they grow
they learn from conceptualized issues and are
able to form attitude.

 It has its own values and norms that will
influence attitude formation.

 It can either enhance or deter attitude
formation.
