Part of Speech

• The smallest elements that have distinctive


meanings based on their use and functions.
• Each part of speech explains not what the
word is, but how the word is used.
• The same word can be a noun in one
sentence and a verb or adjective in the next.,
i.e. : love, work, etc

• An adverb can modify a verb, an

clause.
• The seamstress quickly made the

Verb

• A verb “is what you do!”


• I will run, hop, and skip down the track.
Nouns

• A noun is a person place or thing.


• Ms. Arruda is going to Vegas this
weekend.
Pronouns

• A pronoun can replace the noun or


another pronoun.
• Which show do you want to see?
Adjectives

• An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun


by describing, identifying, or qualifying
words.
• The truck-shaped balloon floated over
the treetops.
Conjunctions

• You can use Conjunctions to link words,


phrases, and clauses.
• I ate the pizza and the pasta!
Prepositions

• A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and


phrases to other words in a sentence (on,
against, over, during, beneath, beside)
• The teacher is standing in front of the
class.
Interjection

• An interjection is a word added to a


sentence to convey emotion.
• (Ouch!, Hey!)

• Here are some sentences made with

Words with More than One Function

•  Many words in English can have more


than one function, or be more than one
part of speech.
• For example, "work" can be a verb and a
noun; "but" can be a conjunction and a
preposition; "well" can be an adjective,
an adverb and an interjection.
• "What function is this word doing in this
sentence?"
