RETAIL TECHNOLOGY…
• It is the technology used by retail so as to
secure areas such as catalog and e commerce
fulfilment, merchandise and assortment
planning and distribution and logistics.
RADIO FREQUENCY
IDENTIFICATION (RFID)
• It is the use of an object (RFID tag)
applied or incorporated into a product,
animal, or person for the purpose of
identification and tracking using radio
waves.
• Some tags can be read from several
meters away and beyond the line of sight
of the reader.
There are generally three types of RFID tags:-
• Active RFID tags:- It contain a battery and can
transmit signals autonomously.
• Passive RFID tags:- These are having no
battery and require an external source to
provoke signal transmission.
• Battery assisted passive (BAP):- It requires an
external source to wake up but have significant
higher forward link capability providing great
read range.
An Example of a Simple RF Subsystem
BARCODE
• It is an optical machine {barcode readers}
readable representation of data, which shows
certain data on certain products.
• Barcodes represents data in the widths (lines)
and the spacings of parallel lines. They also
come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons ,
other geometric patterns within imagesand
also in 2Ds.
Enterprise resource planning
(ERP)
• It is a software which helps in the flow
of information between all business
functions within the organization and
manage the connections with the
outside stakeholders.
• Built on a centralized database and
normally utilizes a common
computing platform.
• It normally consolidate all business
operations into a uniform and
enterprise wide system environment.

Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)

• This is technology used to identify items as they pass

through a gated area.
• Typically this identification is used to alert someone of
the unauthorized removal of items from a store,
library, or data center.
• EAS systems are used wherever there is a chance of
theft of small to large items.
• By placing an EAS tag on an item, it is not necessary to
hide the item behind locked doors and so makes it
easier for the consumer to review the product.
Some Other Technologies In Retail
Industry

 Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

 Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)
 Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)
