CHOOSING AND EVALUATING

TOPICS FOR RESEARCH

Topic Selection
To avoid the formulation of unsound and
undesirable subjects, you should consider the
following criteria in choosing a topic (Bautista 1982;
Manlapaz & Francisco, 1985; Stanley, Shimkin &
Lanner, 1988; Willson, 1980):

1) Your interest in the topic

2) The availability of data on the topic
3) Your ability to handle the topic; and
4) The relevance of the topic.
Topics to avoid (McCrimmon, 1976; Willson,
1980)

• Topics that can be adequately developed

from a single source
• Topics that are so technical that the writer
cannot understand his/her material
anymore
• Topics that can be developed solely from
personal experience and therefore do not
require research
• Topics that are too subjective
• Topics that are too narrow or too trivial for a
paper of the suggested length
• Topics that require moral judgment
• Overworked or worn-out topics
• Topics on which little has been published
anywhere
• Topics on which the university library has
little material
• Topics indistinguishable from those selected
by your classmates
Topics to consider (Perfecto, Paterno, & Pison, 2005)
• It should be important to you and others (what will you &
they get out of it?)
• It should be of personal interest to you (so that you’ll really
exert time & effort)
• It should be interesting and intelligible to your classmates (
not technical, jargon)
• The topic should acquaint you with cross-section of source
materials (to know all sides of the topic)
• It should be relatively new and recent (it shouldn’t be
overused)
• It should be manageable (can be completed in a given
period of time)
