DWDM:
DWDM SYSTEM
WHY DWDM ?

Since DWDM wavelengths are highly integrated with the fiber

during light transmission, DWDM is able to reach a longer
distance than CWDM. Unlike the DWDM system, CWDM is
unable to travel unlimited distances. The maximum reach of
CWDM is about 160 km. While an amplified DWDM system
can go much further.
ADVANTAGES:
• Allows multiple connection over one
fiber thus reducing fiber plant
requirement.
• Smooth Expansion
• Long Haul transmission
• Data Transparency
• This can provide fiber redundancy.
Disadvantages of WDM:
• Signals cannot be very close.
• Lightwave carrying while using WDM are
limited to 2 point circuit.
• Cost of the system increases with the
addition of optical components.
• Difficulty in wavelength tuning
Inefficiency in BW utilization
• Difficulty in a cascaded topology
APPLICATIONS:

• In SONET network.
• Dense WDM multiplexing allow to muxed and demuxed numbers
of channel closer to one another to achieve greater efficiency.
• FDM to the optical fiber.
• Optical transport network.
• Local exchange network.
