COURTYARDS
The courtyard as passive design device works
as a modifier of the microclimate and acts as
a heat sink and cold air storage. Buildings
with internal courtyards are characterized as
a suitable solution for cooling in hot climate
regions to provide inner spaces with cold air
and daylight.
NATURAL VENTILATIONS
●Passive ventilation is the process of supplying air to and removing air
from an indoor space without using mechanical systems,
●Typically by wind speed or differences in pressure internally and
externally. Project teams typically choose natural ventilation because:
Reduces carbon emissions.
●In Between the access to Classrooms and the Administrative Office
provided with Greenery Corridors.
●This design offers students and faculty the ability to see and feel nature
even when inside the classroom.
● Three-storied hallways, open quadrangles with ample area for greenery, a rough texture finish are the unique features of this ‘glocal’ design.

● This Provides the Natural air & Efficient Light to enter the Corridors & Courtyards with sufficient Breeze, keeps the space Relaxed from Heat Accumulated Before.

● The voids in the structure lets in the fresh air from the green surroundings.

● The pergolas and geometrical roofs let in the controlled ‘Sunlight’ creating a dramatic effect and eventually avoiding the excess heat from entering in.

● Doshi merged the Fatehpur Sikri’s courtyards and the gardens of Bangalore in his vision.

● Instead of courtyards that are dry and rigid, he made green corridors that allowed academic exchanges to be carried beyond the classroom .
RAINWATER HARVESTING
Water, a most precious commodity, is in
short supply the world over. Excess
dependence on ground and surface water
has resulted in an alarming decrease in the
quantity and quality of water available.
Environmentalists have issued dire warnings
of water shortages in a few years to come, if
our water consumption habits do not take a
turn for the better. Rain water harvesting is
an effective way for individuals to
contribute towards water conservation. It is
a simple and inexpensive way to obtain
water for some, if not all, basic needs of
human beings. The IIM Bangalore campus, ● Installed in 2010, this is an ongoing activity.
sprawling over a hundred acres, offers large ● Usage: Rooftop rainwater runoff reused for
and excellent catchment areas, making it bathing, washing, flushing etc. except for drinking.
ideal for the implementation of a rainwater
harvesting system.
SKYLIGHTS AND PERGOLAS
● It increase their daylighting potential without the
need to increase their size, tubular skylights
minimize heat loss in the winter and heat gain in
summer.

● Natural illumination is achieved by skylights and

saves electricity.creates dramatic effect
highlighting certain area.
HIGH CORRIDORS
● The high corridors around the structure,
pergolas and voids in the structure lets in
fresh air from the green surrounding.
● The pergolas and geometrical roofs lets in
controlled light and also avoids excess
heat from entering in.
● The width of the corridors is modulated to
allow for casual seating and the better
ventilation.
● This system makes allowances for light,
breeze and vision to move freely within
the plan.
HIGH PERFORMANCE
● The interplay of walls and openings, light and
shadows, and solids and voids change the character
of the main building during different times of the
day and during different seasons.

● The design offers students and faculty the ability to

see and feel nature even when inside the classroom.

● Juxtaposition of walls and openings like high doors

and large windows, daylight and shadows, and solids
and voids continues to change the space’s presence
and appearance during different times of the day and
different seasons, you will never find a boring
moment at the IIM complex.
HIGH PERFORMANCE WINDOWS AND DOORS
● It can significantly increase your comfort and
reduce your energy bills.
● It helps to reduce heat gain are to include good
insulation levels, and shade windows and thermal
mass in summer.
● The main methods to increase heat loss are to
place and design openings to allow good
ventilation, add ceiling fans or whole-of-house
fans, and ensure any air-conditioning works well
with building design and insulation.

VENTILATIONS
● There are four palaces inside, Aftab Mahal, Afzal Mahal,
Tahniyat Mahal also Mahtab Mahal.

● The northern courtyard has the Bara Imam, where all the major
administrative actions took place.

● In, The Bara Imam is a long corridor of quarters which overlook

the fountain and pool that in the centre to help the water body
to relax the heat accumulated in the surrounding air, this were
the administrative wing and Shishe-Alat in the past time.

● This structure has a considerable Persian influence in its

architecture, with domes and arch making multiple appearance
and bring a sufficient amount of Breeze & Air to reclaim the
heat in the space nearby the corridors.

● In Southern Courtyard Mahtab Mahal and Tahniyat Mahal which

have delicate carvings and majestic archways giving the very
comfort to move the air circulation throughout the Hall.
