MODULE 4:
CARRY OUT A
SCIENTIFIC
INVESTIGATION
Situation
● Diagram shows two kids
swinging on swings with
different height of chains.
● Kid with longer chain swings
slower compared to the other
kid with a shorter chain.
● Carry out a simple experiment to investigate
this situation.

● You may need to complete this table in order

to get your findings.

7 Procedures

i. The apparatus was set up as diagram above.

ii. State the method to control the manipulated variable.

The length of the pendulum was adjusted to l = 20.0 cm.

iii. State the method to measure the responding variable.

The pendulum bob was displaced at an angle less than 10 ⁰ and released. The time
taken for 20 complete oscillations, t was recorded.
iv. Repeat the experiment at least 4 times.
The experiment was repeated with length of pendulum, l = 30.0 cm, 40.0
cm, 50.0 cm, 60.0 cm and 70.0 cm.

9 Analysing data
• Plot a graph of T against l
• Plot a graph of T2 against l
10 Discussion • State the precaution during the experiment

• Determine the gradient, m of graph T2 against l. State the value in SI

unit.

• Given T2 = where g is the Earth’s gravitational acceleration.

• Relate gradient, m to the value of g and determine the value of g in the

experiment.
