 In the present tense we add “not” after the
verb to be to form the negative

Ex. We are not at home now

 In the past tense we do the same, so :

Ex. We were not at home yesterday

Negative
I was not (wasn’t)
You were not (weren’t)
He was not (wasn’t)
She was not (wasn’t)
It was not (wasn’t)

We were not (weren’t)

You were not (weren’t)
They were not (weren’t)
Do you remember how we do the negative in the
present simple tense?

Exactly!!!! We use the auxiliary “do” + “not”

(don’t) and “does” + “not” (doesn’t) for the
third person in singular.

Present simple:
We don’t play tennis On Sunday
She doesn’t study on Saturday
 In the past tense we also use the auxiliary
“do” but now we use its past form “did”

Past simple
We did not (didn’t) play tennis last Sunday
She didn’t study last Saturday
Carlos didn´t work today.
 When you have to turn a sentence into negative you
have to take into account that the past is in “didn’t”
the verb after didn’t is in present

Ex. She wrote a book (past affirmative)

She didn’t write a book (past negative)
 I cleaned my car last month
 I didn´t clean my car last month
 Subject+ Aux didn´t+verb(present)+com+time in
past
Negative
I did not write a book last month
You didn’t read my letter yesterday
Rose didn’t study for her exam
She didn’t run one mile last week
It didn’t drink water today

We didn’t look for the money

You didn’t understand my lesson last friday
They didn’t jump in the bed
