INTRODUCTION:
The importance of the development of new renewable technologies to generate
electricity have impulsed the development of the wind turbines.
Actually, in the market exists a great variety of design of this kind of devices.
The characteristics of the helical Savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) have shown
excellent capabilities for the urban media, such as the ability to extract power from
turbulent winds and the generation of less noise and vibrations.
For that reason it is important to develop a Savonius VAWT with a superior efficiency
(power coefficient, CP).
This optimization involved the rotor profile shape, diameter and working velocity of it
(tip speed ratio or TSR).

DIFFERENT WAYS TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY
FROM RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES:
1. Wind mill or turbine
2. Solar panels
3. Bio-mass
4. Hydro-power
5. Tidal energy
6. Geothermal energy
7. Solar Radiation
8. Rotors
9. Wind Turbine

RENEWABLE RESOURCES :
• Current installed base of it’s 16,492.42
MW which is 10.12% of total installed
base.
• India is second largest exploiter of wind
energy (1000 MW) and fifth largest wind
power industry, with installed capacity
of 9587 MW.
• India utilize 33 lakh bio-gas plant, 2 lakh
solar cooker and street lighting system
using photo voltaic technology
• India targets 14000 MW generation
capacity in future.
• Share of non-hydro renewable in power
generation increased from 2.5% to 8.6%

GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY BY USING WIND
TURBINE (VAWT type) :
The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is a wind turbine
in which the direction of air flow is perpendicular
to the axis of rotation of blades

ADVANTAGES OF VAWT :
• Cheaper to produce than horizontal axis turbines.
• More easily installed compared to other wind turbine types.
• Transportable from one location to another.
• Equipped with low-speed blades, lessening the risk to people and
birds.
• Function in extreme weather, with variable winds and even mountain
conditions.
• Permissible where taller structures are prohibited.
• Quieter to operate, so they don’t disturb people in residential
neighbourhoods.

Our Moto :
From this project, we provide a new mechanism to increase the drag
force on the blade as it will increase the performance of wind turbine.
The flipping mechanism used in VAWT is a unique mechanism
designed.
This mechanism is used to change the position of the blades during its
operation to increase the resultant drag force on the turbine blades.
The flipping of the blades is the most important improvement in the
turbine.
