TECHNOLOGY IN

EDUCATION
ASTRID ELIANA LONDONO
CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY
• Technology impacts classrooms from the first computer in the 19
century and has changed the world significantly. Indeed, one of the
significant changes comes with the Internet open to the public in
1991 (Maloy, et al., 2016).
• Since 2000, online e-learning courses have impacted education
with lectures, conferences recorded, guide discussions, forums,
blogs, etc. (ECPI, 2018).
• Video, online meetings, and zoom classes start being part of the
school environment.
• Books were anymore a fundamental part of gathering information
and learning. People change it for E-books and online research.
Finally, iPad, laptops, smartphones, podcasts, and digital music
appear to change how we communicate and get information (Maloy,
et al., 2016).
CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY
Social Outlets like Facebook (2000) change the way
we communicate. It impacts society and classrooms.
Also, in the last 20 years, other networks have
appeared like: YouTube, Instagram, Skype, Twitter,
LinkedIn, and others.

“These tools are known as information and

communication technologies (ICTS). ICTS enable
people to create, use, and share knowledge, the
essential ingredient of education”. (Maloy et al.,
2016).

training to use these technologies.
• Students need to be ready to
navigate the world through these
technologies. (Pan & Franklin,
2011).
CHANGE IN SOCIAL NORMS
• “Technologies themselves are evolving
rapidly, often far faster than schools
are able to change their practices or
even their purchasing plans.”
(Mcmillan, Honey & Mandinach,
2003).

communication. • Access to fake information.

TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY
Teachers use technology in two ways: “Inside-the-classroom instructional tools to present academic material
and create interactive learning experiences for students in the classroom Outside-the-classroom professional
resources to manage day-to-day administrative and professional responsibilities”. (Maloy, et al., 2016).
Example: online presentations, internet research, student participation, training. Outside – professional
communication, networking, planning, training.
STUDENTS USE TECHNOLOGY
Students use technology: “Inside- and
outside-the-classroom learning resources to
promote academic learning both during
class time and outside the school day.”
(Maloy, et al., 2016).
Example: Group work, research, homework,
playing educational games, communication
with teachers and classmates, checking the
email, reading digital books, etc.
TECHNOLOGY MUST BE USE FOR:

• “The e-learning report (U.S. Department of education, 2000), for example, advanced three
recommendations:
1. Improve the preparation of new teachers, including their knowledge of how to use technology
for effective teaching and learning;
2. Increase the quantity, quality, and coherence of technology-focused activities aimed at the
professional development of teachers
3. Improve real-time instructional support available to teachers who use technology.” .
(Mcmillan, et al., 2003)
ENCOURAGING THE CORRECT USE OF
TECHNOLOGY
• Keep the connection with the students.
• Listen to others without any technology distractions.
• Stablish a time in the classroom to use a device.
• Use prompts that promote participation and talk.
• Use the technology on purpose. (Young, 2016).
RISK USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE
CLASSROOM
• “ Overuse and monotonicity (PowerPoint)
• Danger of using recycling material
• Teachers unable to handle the complexity of a device
• Lose focus on learning goals
• Use of outdated technology
• Online routine boring and same for students
• Lack of time to prepare well lessons” (Knill, 2007).
BENEFITS TO USE TECHNOLOGY IN THE
CLASSROOM,
• “Shake up old paradigms
• Rethink the subject
• Illustrate real-life applications
• Explain things better
• Use audio-visual channels
• Share teaching tools with other teachers.
• Have students become more involved”. (Knill, 2007).
TOOL - HTTPS://WWW.GOGUARDIAN.COM/

• Helps teachers to keep track of what students are doing during the lesson.
• Support teacher's communication with students one on one while teaching.
• Live class video.
• Grouping and support of cooperative learning groups.
• Monitor student use of computers.
• Students could use other devices to avoid teachers using this platform.
• Students can feel offended if you are not using GoGuardian correctly and with respect.
