EUCLID OF ALEXANDRIA
Euclid and the Elements
Who is Euclid of Alexandria?
 Greek Mathematician
 Considered “Father of Geometry”
 Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 325 BC
 Died in 205 BC
 Created the idea of The Elements which are 13 books
that talks about Geometry
Euclid and the Elements

It is believed that Euclid went to school in

Greece and much of his education was came
from the knowledge of Plato of Athens, Egypt,
a legendary Greek Mathematician.
After graduation Euclid packed up and move
to Alexandria, Egypt to teach
Euclid and the Elements
He taught in Alexandria in the time of Ptolemy
Solter, who reigned over Egypt from 323 BC
to 285 BC.
Euclid spent most of his time at local library
in Alexandria were he started thinking about
geometrical knowledge.
Euclid and the Elements
Being just discovered geometry, it became
the most most complex form of mathematics
at the time
Euclid soon began developing theorems. He
then combined all his different theorems
which he called the Elements
THE ELEMENTS
The Elements
The oldest documents of his works.
This book has been used for about 2000 years.
Each book contains different proportions and theories.
In the Elements there are over 467 propositions to solid geometry,
along with theories that related to his geometrical ideas.
Euclid unified a collection of isolated discoveries into a single
deductive system based on a set of initial postulates, definition, and
axiom.
THE ELEMENTS

 Consist of 13 books
 Written so that people could learn how:
To draw a straight line from any point to another
To describe a circle with any center or raduis
That all right angles are equal to each other
To produce a finite continously in straight line
