Project Dissertation Title: Impact of
COVID-19 on Publishing Industry in
India.
Introduction

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

As we can see, COVID-19 has changed our content consumption pattern. The interactions with content
are now beyond its physical form.
While the publishing industry has evolved at a languid pace over the last decade, COVID-19 has
enforced a radical disruption. In these tough times, when people were (many places still are) restricted
to their homes, content creators have ensured a steady flow of information, art, and even gossip
material for their audience to binge on. Likewise, newspapers, books, and magazines played their part
in providing enough intellectual, thought-provoking content. Publishers have quickly responded to
different types of content requirements and have supported in every way. Journalists and publications
have ensured that readers get the latest news, book publishers have gone online to support home-
schooling. Some organizations even took off pay walls to allow free access, while some others went
hyper-local to help people stay in touch.
LITERATURE REVIEW

A review of the published literature on the India publishing industry reveals an intriguing dichotomy
regarding the diverse and often contradictory cultural and commercial mission o book publishers. Is
book publishing solely an intellectual and cultural endeavour?

The pandemic has changed Indian publishing dramatically. As a discount and convenience hunting
population, we had embraced e-commerce platforms, but there was a significant section of people who
preferred buying offline. That behavior has changed. Any offline establishment which isn’t essential
(grocery, government office, airport) or doesn’t offer a social experience (mall, restaurant) is going to
struggle.
Objective of the project

1. To study the change in book sales pre and post COVID-19.

2. To get to know the major retailers of book sellers, distributors, publishers.
3. Has there been a shift to other alternatives since COVID-19.
Research Methodology

The most important methodological choice researchers make is based on the distinction between
qualitative and quantitative data. As mentioned previously, qualitative data takes the form of
descriptions based on language or images, while quantitative data takes the form of numbers.

Qualitative data is richer and is generally grounded in a subjective and inter pretivist perspective.
However, while this is generally the case, it is not always so. Qualitative research supports an in-depth
understanding of the situation investigated and, due to time constraints; it generally involves a small
sample of participants.
