DOSAGE
To determine the optimum coagulant dosage for clarifying the
given sample of water by using alum as the coagulant and
performing the jar test experiment.
OBJECTIVE :
APPLICATION :

Treatment of wastewater and to determine the amount of

harmful constituents present normal and wastewater and their
control to safe limit in Public Health Engineering Department
and in the industry.
 As we know that, the raw water contains many
suspended solids, some of which can be removed by a
simple process which is called sedimentation. But there
are fine and small particle size impurities present in
water that can be removed by sedimentation process in
which the finer particles are made to combine together
in presence of reagent called coagulation. THEOERY :
Jar test apparatus

Glass beakers APPARATUS :

Pipette

Stirrer
 Take 1 lit of water sample in
each 6 glass jar, make the
sample homogeneous by
just stirring in each in each
subsequent jar.
Now pipette out of 50 ml
alum solution and add it to
first jar. Hence increase the
amount of dose by 5 ml in
each subsequent jar.
Hence all the jars on the
platform of jar test
apparatus. Then put down
all paddles to a desired
depth.

Now start the machine and

stirrer the sample for 1-2
minutes at a speed at 100-
120 rpm.

PROCEDURE :
Reduce
• After reduce of the speed 25
rpm and run it to 20 minutes.
PROCEDURE :
Switch on
• After complete of stirring,
switch on the light and allow
the flocks produced to be settled
down for 30-45 minutes.
Observe
• Then observe the exact of
settlement in each jar.

The amount of dose in jar
having maximum settlement
is the desired value of test.
PROCEDURE :
If two jars have almost same
removed, take least dose jar
for result.
If the with maximum dose
gives maximum clarity
respect the test with high
dose value with some
suitable increment .
 After performing the
test found that
