An embedded question is a question inside a


larger sentence.

Embedded yes-no questions use if, whether,


or whether or not. Their meanings are Q: Did Allie forget about the party?
similar. EQ: I wonder if Allie forgot about the party.

Q: Has she left?


An embedded question does not use
EQ: Do you know whether or not she’s left?
question word order. If an embedded
question is in a statement, use a period. If it is
in a question, use a question mark. Q: What time is the party?
EQ: Do you know what time the party is?
EQ: I don’t know what time the party is.
NOT: Do you know what time is the party?
