EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT OF BOILER BY

USING ECONOMIZER

Symbol number: 27271 Date: 10/02/2079

INTRODUCTION

A boiler is an enclosed vessel that provides a means for combustion heat

to be transferred
When water is boiled into steam its volume increases about 1,600 times
In the present scenario of energy demand overtaking energy supply
Stack loss refers to wasted heat, unburned fuel, and excess air that escape
up the flue stack
There are numerous methods of improving Boiler efficiency
Economizer is a device that is mechanically designed and is utilized to
reduce and optimize energy consumption
installed with the aim  to heat feed water by utilizing heat from exhaust
gases
OBJECTIVES

• General Objective
To analyse and calculate the efficiency of steam boiler before and after installing
economizer emphasizing on improvement of boiler efficiency.
• Specific objective
To calculate the efficiency of boiler before and after installing economizer
To compare efficiency before and after installing economizer
To determine the losses incurred and sources of loss.
To determine the losses incurred and sources of loss.
To design economizer
To calculate the saving in Fuel cost after installation of economizer
LITERATURE REVIEW

• George Babcock and Steven Wilcox were two of the founding fathers of
the steam-generating boiler.
• The steam-generating boiler’s roots go back to the late 1700s and early
1800s with the development of the kettle-type boiler.
• Grate Company and the American Stoker Company, combined to form the
Combustion Engineering Company in 1800s.
• It wasn’t until around 1867, with the development of the convection boiler
that the steam-generating industry began.
• It wasn’t until around 1867, with the development of the convection boiler
that the steam-generating industry began.
• George Babcock and Steven Wilcox were the first to patent their boiler
design, which used tubes inside a firebrick-walled structure to generate
steam, in 1867.
• The Stirling Boiler Company, owned by O.C. Barber also began making
boilers in 1891
• In mid-19th century, it became possible to manufacture complex
machinery, capable of heating water in a much more efficient way.
• In 1907, the Stirling Boiler Company merged with the Babcock & Wilcox
Company
• Grate Company and the American Stoker Company, combined to form the
Combustion Engineering Company in 1800s.
• Technology of gasification has been around since the 1920s, its use as an
alternative fuel–burning method of generating electricity and power began
in the late 1970s.
