Charmed I’m Sure
Concept Sketches
Design Statement
For my design statement I wanted it to include something that Skylar would
enjoy looking at, have the picture be easily interchangeable, and include as much
of the suggested ideas or themes as possible.
Attachment hole
For the attachment hole I had left
enough room for either a “D” ring loop,
or a simple band. The hole goes
through the piece going from the front,
extending through the back of the
project. The hole is also made wide
enough to make sure that multiple
different attachments could be used to
connect this charm to the luggage or
backpack.
Charm Attachment
The attachment hole can easily be
combined with multiple different types of
attachments. When a attachment loop
or ring is slid through the hole it then
can be attached to the users luggage or
backpack making it very easy to take on
or off while keeping a simple design.
Design Customization
The overall design of the charm has
the owner’s name on the back and then has
a picture like frame on the front that creates
the plain for design customization. This
area can be changed to include symbols,
words, pictures, and other significant
designs that the owner might want. This is
what allows the design to be easily
customizable since you would only have to
edit the name on the back and then create
a new picture within the framed area on the
front.
Hole to edge distance
When creating the Charm we had a
constraint that stopped us from creating
the hole any closer to the edge than
0.25 in. This specification is followed in
the design since the shortest distance is
just over 0.25 in. to the edge.
Manufacturing process
The charm is created through a additive
manufacturing process. The part is
created in a 3d file on a computer and
then the file is exported to a 3d printer.
THe 3d printer will create the part by
melting PLA filament to then create
layers until it builds the charm from the
ground up. There is no modifications that
follow that step which makes the entire
manufacturing process a additive
process since there is nothing being
taken away to create the final product.
Manufacturing Material
The manufactured charm will be
produced from PLA filament. PLA is a
polylactic acid which is one of the most
popular 3d printing materials in the 3d
printing industry.

The filament used in the process is

Flashforge White PLA plastic filament.
Shown Above.
Size Constraints
The design of the charm is designed to
not exceed the maximum size of 3 cubic
inches. The largest measurements of
the charm are 3in length, by 1 inch tall,
and by ¾ of a inch thick. The actual
product is slightly less in thickness from
it not including the frame which
surrounds the picture on the front. In
total the overall size of the design is
less than 3 cubic inches.
