Blood is required for surgery, accident victims or to treat
patients with leukaemia, hemophilia and other illnesses.

Hemochromatosis is a health condition that arises due to
excess absorption of iron by the body. Regular blood
donation may help in reducing iron overload.

Blood donation helps in lowering the risk of cancer. By
donating blood the iron stores in the body are maintained
at healthy levels.

damage to the pancreas, and heart abnormalities by the

Criteria to be a blood donor

a. First time donor: 18-60 years old
b. Regular donor: 18-65 years old

DONATED BLOOD

Handling
Packed red blood cells shall be immediately transported directly to the nurse
requesting the component for transfusion.

Storage / Shelf Life


PRBCs are stored in a Blood Bank refrigerator at a temperature of 1-6ºC until
issue. The shelf life is 42 days from the date of collection.
Method of handling and storing the donated blood
PLASMA (FROZEN & THAWED)
Handling
Once frozen plasma thawed prior to issue, any plasma shall be immediately
transported directly to the nurse requesting the component for transfusion.

Storage / Shelf Life


Frozen Plasma is maintained in the Blood Bank freezer at a temperature ≤-18ºC until
it is thawed.
-Frozen Plasma - The shelf life is 1 year from the date of collection.
-Thawed Plasma - The shelf life of thawed plasma is either 24 hours or 5 days,
depending on the plasma product.
Method of handling and storing the donated blood
Platelet
Handling
Once dispensed, platelets shall be immediately transported directly to the requesting
the component for transfusion.

Storage Shelf / Life


All platelets are stored at room temperature (20-24ºC) with gentle agitation until issue.
The shelf life is 5 days from the date of collection.
Pooled Platelets expire 4 hours from the time of preparation (pooling if required)
pooling.
The expiration date is located on the unit(s).
