1. FICTION
• What is Fiction?
• Is a story that has been made up in the author’s mind.

• There are two forms of fiction:


• Short story
• Can be easily read in one session
• Explore one topic
• Novel
• Takes more session to read
• Has a longer, more complicated plot

• There are seven elements of fiction writing
1. Plot
2. Character
3. Conflict
4. Theme
5. Setting
6. Point of View
7. Tone and mood

3. PLOT
• A series of events or action that happens in the story

• Generally there are two types of plot:-


i. Main plot
ii. Sub plot – a second story or side story that is complete and interesting in
its own right.

• Plots follow the Freytag’s Pyramid (next page)

1. Exposition – gives the


background information of the
. story
2. Inciting incident – an
incident or event which
begins the central conflict.
3. Rising action – the central
conflict is developed.

4. Crisis or turning point – high


point of interest or suspense in
. the story.
5. Climax – the point of the story
at which something decisive
happens to determine the future
course of.
6. Falling action – the events that
occur after the turning point.

where the central conflict is
resolved.

7. CHARACTER
• Any person or figure in the story.

• Types of characters
• Main character
• Protagonist – Leading role/Hero etc.
• Antagonist - Rival, Competitor etc.

• Minor character
• Static vs Dynamic – does the character stay the same during story or change?
• Round vs flat – is the characteristics life-like or unrealistic?

8. CONFLICT
• Challenges that lies within the story

• Types of conflicts
1. Individual vs him/herself (internal conflict)
2. Individual vs individual
3. Individual vs society
4. Individual vs nature
5. Individual vs God/fate/Destiny (external conflicts)

9. THEME
• A central idea that runs throughout the story.
• The message of the story or poem what the story adds up to

• Example :
• The main themes in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone include
friendship, privilege, nature versus nurture, discovery, and the
power of love.
• In Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, the main themes are man vs. nature,
technology, and power

10. SETTING
• The time and place of the story.

• Examples:
• The general setting of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is England in
the 1990's.
• For Jurassic Park, is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off
Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica in 1990.

11. POINT OF VIEW
• The angle from which the story is narrated.

• Three most common types:


a. First Person
- stories told with “ I” as the narrator
- Usually the narrator is the protagonist, but sometimes minor character
b. Third Person (omniscient)
- Stories where the narrator uses “ he” and “she: and knows what’s in every
character's mind (omniscient = all knowing)
c. Third Person (limited)
- The narrator can’t see what’s in the characters’ minds.

12. TONE AND MOOD
• Tone - the attitude of the author or narrator toward the story or character
(angry, playful)
• Mood – the attitude or emotions of the reader toward the story or
characters ( sad, hopeful, nostalgic)

• Example:
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harrys’ tone is excitement
because Harry learned that he is destined to do more with his life. He
becomes over-joyed when he learns he can leave the Dursley's to be at
Hogwarts.
While the reader’s mood is mystery

1. POETRY
• Writing chosen and arranged o create a certain emotional response
through meaning, sound and rhythm.

2. POETRY FORMAT
• Stanza – is a group of lines
in a poem, considered as a
pharagraph.

• Types of stanzas include:


• Couplet – 2 line
• Quatrain – 4 line
• Cinquain – 5 line
• Sestet – 6 line
• Octave – 8 line

3. TYPES OF POETRY - NARRATIVE

• Narrative Poem – posses the elements of a story like character,


conflicts and plot, but the story is told in verse.

4. TYPES OF POETRY-LYRICS

• Lyric Poem – a highly


musical verse that expresses
the observations and feeling of
a single speaker.

5. TYPES OF POETRY -HAIKU

• Haiku – a 3 line Japanese verse form. Usually about nature.

• Free/ Blank Verse – poetry


not written in a regular pattern

• Concrete Poem – is a poem


whose shape suggest a subject

9. TYPES OF POETRY - BALLAD

• Ballad poem – is a song like


poem that tells a story often
dealing with adventure and
romance
