COMPONENTS AND USES
Components

A single-acting scotch yoke actuator is made of three main components:-

1) housing containing the yoke mechanism

2) pressure cylinder containing the piston
3) spring enclosure

When air pressure is supplied into the cylinder chamber, a linear force is applied on the piston
surface.

What is a Scotch yoke mechanism used for :-

The Scotch yoke mechanism is most commonly used in control valve actuators in high-pressure oil
and gas pipelines, as well as in various internal combustion engines, such as the Bourke engine,
Sytech engine and many hot air engines and steam engines.
WHAT IS SCOTCH YOKE MECHANISUM

The Scotch Yoke (also known as slotted link mechanism) is a reciprocating motion
mechanism, converting the linear motion of a slider into rotational motion, or vice versa.
The piston or other reciprocating part is directly coupled to a sliding yoke with a slot that
engages a pin on the rotating part.

Why is it called a Scotch yoke :-

The term scotch yoke continues to be used when the slot in the yoke is shorter than the
diameter of the circle made by the crank pin. For example, the side rods of a locomotive
may have scotch yokes to permit vertical motion of intermediate driving axles.

Who invented Scotch yoke mechanism :-

The Scotch yoke was used as an energy conversion device for the Bourke engine, a two-
stroke engine developed early in the 20th century by engineer and inventor Russell Bourke.
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

CONSTRUCTION :-

The main parts of Scotch Yoke Mechanism are Crank, Sliding Pin, Sliding Yoke
with Slot, Fixed LInk, Connecting Rod or Piston which receives the output
reciprocating motion of Scotch Yoke Mechanism.

The piston or the reciprocating part is coupled to a sliding yoke.

This sliding Yoke has a slot that engages a sliding pin which slides inside the sliding
yoke and is a non-fixed slider of double slider crankshaft.
This sliding pin also attached to a crank which on the other side has a fixed link of
double slider crankshaft. This crank rotates around the fixed link as its center point
and the sliding pin as its endpoint.

When the crank rotates around the fixed link, the sliding pin slides in the slot of
the yoke and the yoke slide forward and backward.
Working :-

In the Scotch Yoke Mechanism, the rotary motion of crank is converted into linear
motion of the reciprocating part. The power is supplied from the DC motor shaft and
the crank attached to the shaft starts rotating. As the crank rotates the pin or the slider
connected to the crank starts sliding in the yoke and also moves the yoke forward.
When the pin of the crank is at the top and the crank rotates in a clockwise direction
the yolk will get a displacement in the forward direction. The maximum displacement of
the yoke will be equal to the length of the crank. When the crank completes one-fourth
of its rotation, the yoke reverses its movement and start moving in the backward
direction and continue moving in the backward direction until crank reaches its
leftmost position and then again move in forward direction. Like this, the rotational
motion of crank is converted to reciprocating motion of yolk. This reciprocating motion
of yolk is transferred to the piston or connecting rod as needed.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES:-

 Easy construction of assembly and operation.

 Used to perform of cutting, sliding and etc.
  It is a directly convert method of rotary into Linear.
 High torque to be made with small size of cylinder.
  It spent high time in top dead center, so improve engine efficiency.

DISADVANTAGES:-

 The high wear produced due to sliding friction and high contact pressure.
  List percentage of time spent in bottom center position, to reduce the below time in
two stroke engine.
  The Piston motion is a pure sine wave will occur overtime give a constant rotation
speed.
  It requires proper guide way for reciprocating motion of arm.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

A project is a golden opportunity for learning and self-development. I consider

myself very lucky and honored to have so many wonderful teachers guide me
through in completion of this project.

My grateful thanks to Prof.Dr.K.R.Joshi Principal of PES MODERN COLLAGE OF

ENGINEERING who in spite of being extraordinarily busy with his duties, took time
out to hear, guide and keep me on correct path. I do not know where I would have
been without him. A humble thank you sir.

PROF. S.P GOSAVI SIR Project Guide whose patience I have probably tested to limit. He
was always involved in the entire process, shared his knowledge and encouraged
me to think. Thank You Sir.

Last But not the least there were so many who shared valuable information that
helped in the successful completion of this project
THANK YOU
