HIKING HALF DOME

THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE ON TWO LEGS


HOW TO GET A PERMIT

• A maximum of 300 permits are awarded per day, with 225 for day hikers and 75 for backpackers.
• Apply for a wilderness permit and check the “half dome” box. (recommended)
• Apply for a day pass (March) to hike half dome in one day with the Cables up (Preseason Lottery)
• Applications: 34,098 (in 2019)
• Application success rate: 29%
• Weekday choices success rate: 2.6%
• Weekend choices success rate: 1.6%
• Get a park pass and hike half dome off season (labor day to memorial day) A bit sketchy but less
people.

• The top of half dome sits at a total elevation of ~8,840 feet


• Distance: 14-18 miles round trip (Mist Trail vs. John Muir Trail)
• Elevation Gain: ~5,200 Feet
• Difficulty: Extremely strenuous!!
• Length of Time: 10 – 14 hours
