UNLESS
►Unless is a conjunction which means kecuali kalau, kecuali
tidak, jika tidak in Indonesia.

►Unless is used when we say that if something doesn’t


happen, something else will happen (or be true) as a result.

►If you want to use unless as a conjunction in your


conditional sentence instead of if, you must make the
opposite clause of the main clause in your sentence.
IF Replaced by Unless
►When your main clause is negative.
• James can’t make the goal if Brian doesn’t pass the ball.
• James can’t make the goal unless Brian passes the ball.

►When your main clause is positive.


• Anna can buy a new makeup set if she save her salary.
• Anna can buy a new makeup set unless she doesn’t save
her salary.
OTHERWISE
►Otherwise is a conjunction which means jika tidak atau
kalau tidak in Indonesia.

►Otherwise is used after an order or suggestion to show what


the result will be if you don’t follow that order or suggestion.

►You can place otherwise in the middle of your two clauses or


at the end of the sentence. Otherwise also means If not.
IF Replaced by Otherwise
►I'd better write it down, otherwise I'll forget it.
►Help me with this, otherwise I won’t be able to lift it.
►Help me with this, I won’t be able to lift it otherwise.
IF ONLY
∙ If only is used when you want to say how doing something would make it possible to
avoid something unpleasant.

∙ If only is a phrase which means kalau saja atau andai saja in Indonesia.

THE USE OF IF ONLY

If only can be used as a way of emphasizing if.


⮚ If only you’d told me, I could have helped you.

The if only clause can also be used alone as an exclamation.

SUPPOSING, SUPPOSE, IMAGINE
∙ Supposing, suppose, and imagine means bayangkan atau andaikan in
Indonesia.
∙ Supposing, suppose, and imagine are used to express conditions without
if.
∙ Examples:
Supposing you had $5 million. What would you spend it on?
Imagine you were president. How would you change the country?
EVEN IF
∙ Even if means bahkan jika in Indonesia.
∙ Even if is used in conditional sentences to emphasize if.
∙ Examples:
Even if you begged him to take the money, he wouldn’t accept.
