• Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is an Indian billionaire


entrepreneur.
• She borns on 23rd March 1953, Banglore, Karnataka,
India
• She is the executive chaiperson and founder of Bicon
Limited and Bicon Biologics Limited, a
biotechnology company based in banglore, India and
the former chairperson of Indian Institute of
Management, Banglore.
• She was educated at Bangalore's Bishop Cotton Girl's
High School, graduating in 1968. She then
attended Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, a
women's college offering pre-university courses as an
affiliate of Bangalore University.
• Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar, was the head
brewmaster at United Breweries.
• He suggested that study fermentation science, and
train to be a brewmaster, a very non-traditional field
for women.
• In 1974, she was the only woman enrolled in the
brewing course and topped in her class. She earned
the degree as master brewer in 1975.
CHALLENGES FACED BY HER

• Talking about the conception of Biocon, she


explained that she was 25 when she started up. “My
journey started 40 years ago because of gender bias. I
call myself an accidental entrepreneur. I started my
company out of a garage. I knew it was going to be a
challenge but I had the determination to succeed. I
was young, had no experience and no collateral. I
faced problems in recruitment because people were
not ready for women.
• Kiran explained how when she started up, she faced a
lot of difficulty in hiring people because she was
young, had no experience and was not credible.
• With time, she managed to find the right set of
people who helped her build and scale her business.

So how did Mazumdar-Shaw reach where she did?


• The answer is resilience. Resilience in the face of internal and
external interference is the mark of a true leader and Mazumdar-
Shaw has time and again proved that she doesn’t back down in
the face of adversity.
• THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG SENSE OF PURPOSEAll
of these leadership qualities are reinforced by a strong sense of
purpose. Throughout her life and in interviews, Mazumdar-
Shaw has spoken of the importance of a strong sense of purpose
for any entrepreneur.
• Any leader is only as good as the team they work
with. This is why building an effective team is an
important aspect of leadership. Mazumdar-Shaw
recognized this and with her limited resources
brought together a team of people willing to learn and
support her in her journey.
