Future in the Past

Compare these two sentences:

We didn't know our ideas were going to be successful.

We believe our ideas are going to be successful.

In the first sentence we know the result (our ideas were successful). In the second sentence we
are predicting the result (our ideas are going to be successful).

Look at the diagram. In the first sentence we are talking about the future seen from a point in
the past. In the second sentence we are talking about the future seen from now.
To talk about the future seen from the past, we use the past tenses of the verb forms we would
usually use to talk about the future. Compare these sentences.

The future seen from now The future seen from the past
am/is/are going to + infinitive was/were going to + infinitive
... our ideas are going to be ... our ideas were going to be
succesful successful…
will + infinitive would + infinitive
... these young fans will go on ... these young fans would go on
to spend… to spend ...
is/are supposed to + infinitive was/were supposed to + infinitive

am/is/are about to + infinitive was/were about to + infinitive

TIP

We often need to change time expressions when we talk about the future seen from the past:
There is to be meeting about it tomorrow. -> There was to be a meeting about it the following
day
