    Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, are among the earliest life forms on Earth. They can exist in unicellular, colonial, multicellular, or filamentous forms. Cyanobacteria are unique in their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and occur in extreme habitats. They produce bioactive secondary metabolites known as cyanotoxins, though not all species produce toxins. Cyanobacterial toxins are classified based on their effects, such as hepatotoxins which affect the liver or neurotoxins which affect the nervous system. Many cyanobacterial genera and species have been shown to produce toxins, including Microcystis, Cylindrospermopsis, and Nodularia.
