What are essential skills?
Essential skills are the skills that people need for work, learning and
life. They are used in the community and the workplace, in different
forms and at different levels of complexity. Definitions, typical
applications and examples are outlined below to help you understand
each essential skill.
What is a 21st century skill?
The term "21st-century skills" is generally used to refer to certain core
competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking,
and problem-solving that advocates believe schools need to teach to
help students thrive in today's world.
What is the importance of 21st century skills
These 21st-century skills are more important to students now than ever
before. They not only provide a framework for successful learning in the
classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where change is
constant and learning never stops. And they are also tremendously
important for our nation's well being.
What are the skills you need to be a successful
student?
According to the WEF, you need a combination of traditional skills and something called ‘social and
emotional learning’ (SEL). This is the ability to collaborate, communicate and solve problems. A student
needs these skills to navigate the evolving digital economy with ease.

The WEF identified 16 key skills across three different areas. Foundational literacies – how students
apply core skills to everyday tasks

Competencies – how students approach complex challenges Character qualities – how students approach
their changing environment. The 16 key skills you need skills you need to be a successful student.

Across the three areas, the key skills identified are:

Foundational Literacies Literacy Numeracy Scientific literacy Information and communications

technology literacy Financial literacy Cultural and civic literacy

Competencies Critical-thinking/problem-solving Creativity Communication Collaboration Character

qualities Curiosity Initiative Persistence/grit Adaptability Leadership Social and cultural awareness
CONCLUSION
The 21st century demands the explicit integration of learningand innovation skills,
information, media and digital literacy skills, aswell as life and career skills. Consequently,
schools in general and EFLclassrooms in particular should provide students with practices
andprocesses focused on acquiring and developing, among other things, creativity, critical
thinking, collaboration, media literacy, initiativeand self-direction, and social and cross-
cultural skills. Ultimately,EFL classrooms need to be filled with meaningful and
intellectuallystimulating activities, practices, and processes that allow students tonot just
articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and FANDIÑO, nonverbal
communication, but to also understand complex perspectives, use multiple media and
technologies, make judgments and decisions, and work creatively with others. As a result,
teachers need to analyzecritically what the 21st century movement offers in order to enrich
theirpedagogical processes and instructional practices. Additionally, thisanalysis can inspire
them to innovate in order to provide their studentswith opportunities to develop the
literacies needed in today’s world.Ultimately, not only can such innovation keep the
education serviceflexible, responsive, and self-renewing, but it can also promote a senseof
well-being in the teaching profession
