NETWORKING

DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this training the participants shall be able to:

1. Identify the different types of networking devices, tools,
and equipment;
2. Determine the uses of UTP cable and its color coding; and
3. Demonstrate on how to make cabling.
NETWORKING DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

Network Hub is a networking device

NETWORK which is used to connect multiple
HUB network hosts. A network hub is also
used to do data transfer. The data is
transferred in terms of packets on a
computer network.
NETWORKING DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

A repeater operates at the physical layer.

Repeater
Its job is to regenerate the signal over the
same network before the signal becomes
too weak or corrupted so as to extend the
length to which the signal can be
transmitted over the same network.
NETWORKING DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

A bridge operates at data link layer. A bridge is a

Bridge repeater, with add on functionality of filtering
content by reading the MAC addresses of source
and destination. It is also used for interconnecting
two LANs working on the same protocol. It has a
single input and single output port, thus making it a
2 port device.
NETWORKING DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

A switch is a multi port bridge with a

Switch
buffer and a design that can boost its
efficiency(large number of  ports imply
less traffic) and performance. Switch is
data link layer device.
NETWORKING DEVICES/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

A router is a device like a switch that routes data

Routers packets based on their IP addresses. Router is
mainly a Network Layer device. Routers normally
connect LANs and WANs together and have a
dynamically updating routing table based on which
they make decisions on routing the data packets.
Router divide broadcast domains of hosts
connected through it.

Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables are widely used in the computer and telecommunications industry as Ethernet cables
 and telephone wires

Short for Registered Jack-

RJ45
45, an RJ-45 is an 8-pin
connection used for
Ethernet network adapters.

A crimping tool is a tool that used to join or

CRIMPING TOOL connect 2 pieces of material together by
compression. The tool compresses the 2
materials together by squeezing one or both
of the materials to form a bond or seal.
Different crimp tools can be used for both
cutting, stripping, bending and compressing.

A cable tester is a device that

LAN TESTER
is used to test the strength and
connectivity of a particular
type of cable or other wired
assemblies.

UTP CABLE Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is a

ubiquitous type of copper cabling
used in telephone wiring and local
area networks (LANs).

TYPE OF UTP CABLE PINOUT AND COLOR CODING

You usually use straight cable to connect different type of

devices. This type of cable will be used most of the time
Straight Cable and can be used to:
1) Connect a computer to a switch/hub's normal port.
2) Connect a computer to a cable/DSL modem's LAN port.
3) Connect a router's WAN port to a cable/DSL modem's LAN port.
4) Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub's uplink port.
(normally used for expanding network)
5) Connect 2 switches/hubs with one of the switch/hub using an
uplink port and the other one using normal port

TYPE OF UTP CABLE PINOUT AND COLOR CODING

It can be used to connect two network devices directly,

Cross-over without the need of the router in the middle. It simply
Cable reversed some of the pins so that the output on one
computer is being sent to the input of another.

FABRICATING AN ETHERNET CROSS-OVER AND

STRAIGHT-THROUGH CABLE
The following items are the materials and tools used for making Ethernet cables:
• LAN Cable Category 5e or Cat5e- standard wire for cabling;
• RJ45 Crimping tool;
• Wire cutter, stripper or scissor; and
• LAN tester.

FABRICATING AN ETHERNET CROSS-OVER AND

STRAIGHT-THROUGH CABLE
1. Cut into the plastic sheath 1 inch from
the end of the cut cable. The crimping
tool has a razor blade that will do the
trick with practice.

2. Unwind and pair the similar colors.

3. Pinch the wires between your fingers
and straighten them out as shown. The
color order is important to do this
correctly.

4. Use wire cutter to make a straight cut

across the wires 1/2 inch from the cut
sleeve to the end of the wires.
5. Push the wires into the connector. Each
wire fits into a slot in the RJ45
connector. Note the position of the blue
plastic shielding. Also note how the
wires go all the way to the end.

6. Take view from the top. Make sure the
wires are all the way in. There should be
no short wires.

7. Crimping the Cable – carefully place the
connector into the Ethernet Crimper and
cinch down on the handles tightly. The
copper splicing tabs on the connector
will pierce into each of the eight wires.
There is also a locking tab that holds the
blue plastic sleeve in place for a tight
compression fit. When you remove the
cable from the crimper, that end is ready
to use.

8. For a standard "Straight-Through"
cable, repeat all steps and wire color
order on the other end of cable. For a
cross-over cable - the other end will
have a different color order as shown by
the crossover picture.
