Filament motion: characterization of the flow

• Anemometer sampling velocity fluctuations

at 10000 Hz
• Sample period is 5s
• The top view records xz plane oscillation
• The side view records xy plane oscillation
• Velocity is increased and then it is
decreased
• Velocity ranges from 0 – 15 m/s, with steps
of 0.5 and 1 m/s when increasing and
decreasing, respectively.

• Side and top view of the filament. As the velocity increases the filament
deflects, and depending on the speed and the bending moment it would
eventually oscillate periodically. Silva, 2019.

• From the anemometer data, the turbulence and scale length can be estimated
• On the left, plots of No Grid and Fine Grid are shown. As velocity increases the turbulence
reduces.
• On the right, we compare it with Wide Grid. It has more turbulence than the fine grid. It
seems to settle for higher speeds

• On the left, the dissipation scale for fine grid. On the right the dissipation length for wide grid.
• A wider grid results in smaller scales
• As the grids get away the length increases for all velocities
