ATM Intranets Internet

ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)

constructed by connecting a plurality of ATM terminal communication devices to each other through connections. Each Terminal communication device have Transmission Function and Receiving function for transmitting and receiving ATM cell, and also have memory that includes connection control table. Connection control table :-virtual path identifier and virtual channel identifier

 Transmitting an ATM cell:-VPI assigned to ATM terminal communication device (transmitter),VCI assigned to other ATM terminal communication device(receiver) For receiving section compares VCI of input ATM cell with VCI of ATM terminal communication device , if match trap the ATM cell else discard.

ATM Cell
Is a basic unit for transfer of information. Comprise of 53 bytes out of which 5 bytes are used for header information and remaining 48 bytes for user information.

 Generic Flow Control (GFC):primary function of this header is the physical access control and also used to control traffic. Virtual Path Identifier / Virtual Channel Identifier (VPI/VCI): is to indicate virtual path and virtual channel identification numbers, so that the cells belonging to the same connection can be distinguished. Payload Type (PT) :When user information is present or the ATM cell has suffered traffic congestion then the PT field will yield this information. Cell Loss Priority (CLP):is used to tell the system whether the corresponding byte is to be discarded during network congestion. Header Error Control (HEC):is a CRC byte for the cell header field and is used for sensing and correcting cell errors.

Intranets
An intranet is a private computer network that uses internet protocol technologies to securely share any part of an organization's information or network operating system within that organization. a network between organizations, and instead refers to a network within an organisation An intranet is built from the same concepts and technologies used for the Internet, such as clientserver computing and the internet protocol suite(TCP/IP).also used some internet protocols. Intranets may provide a gateway to the internet by means of a network gateway with a firewall, shielding the intranet from unauthorized external access

Internet
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard internet protocol suite(TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies. Carries vast range of information resources and services. The Internet has no centralized governance in either technological implementation or policies for access and usage; each constituent network sets its own standards.
